Tax Analysts Tax Notes Today
Tax Analysts Tax Notes Today (“TNT”) is a great resource for finding the latest tax information. TNT provides expert analysis of current tax issues and publishes many types of documents before they are available in other sources, such as the Internal Revenue Bulletin or the Cumulative Bulletin.
TNT is published each business day. The first 3 documents in each issue contain summaries of the day’s important tax items, a table of contents of the day’s publication, and an abstract together with citations for each article published that day. These 3 articles can be extremely helpful to practitioners wanting to keep up with the latest information involving taxes. The following search can be used to retrieve just the first 3 articles in each issue:
department ( today's tax highlights or table of contents or abstracts citations ) AND date aft 10/22/2007
This search uses the DEPARTMENT segment to restrict the search to just the first 3 articles. The date chosen for this search allows you to create an Alert to retrieve just these 3 articles each day. For more information on creating Alerts and using segments, see Using the Alert Feature and Segment (Field) Searching in the LexisNexis Knowledge Base.
The DEPARTMENT segment lists the type of document contained in a particular article. Another useful segment for searching TNT is the HEADLINE segment which contains the title of the article. You can combine these two segments to find documents such as Revenue Rulings, Revenue Procedures, and Technical Advice Memorandum before they are published in the Internal Revenue bulletin. The following search illustrates how to retrieve Revenue Procedure 2007-38:
department ( revenue procedure ) AND headline ( 2007-38 )
TNT is also useful for finding comments to Proposed Treasury Regulations. Comments to a particular Proposed Treasury Regulation can be located by combining the DEPARTMENT segment with the CODE segment (which locates articles discussing a particular code section). The following search retrieves public comments on Proposed Treasury Regulations for Cash or Deferred Arrangements under Internal Revenue Code § 401(k):
department ( public comments AND regulations ) AND code ( 401(k) )
For additional information on searching TNT, see Tax Notes Today® (TNT) in the LexisNexis Knowledge Base.
