Reed Elsevier Launches New LexisNexis™ Brand, Logo and Expanded Global Focus for Global Legal and Information Business
LexisNexis Name to Represent All Reed Elsevier Legal and Information Products Worldwide

NEW YORK, NY, May 10, 2001 - In a move that unifies its legal and information resources under a single brand, Reed Elsevier’s legal division today announced the launch of LexisNexis™ as a masterbrand encompassing its worldwide legal operations and products.

Effective immediately, LexisNexis represents the Reed Elsevier plc legal and information operations in 21 countries and all of its legal and information products marketed worldwide. Andrew Prozes, CEO, LexisNexis Group, heads the New York-based organization.

“Reed Elsevier is a global company with a wide array of legal and information products marketed under different names which also serve as the business identity in various countries,” Prozes said. “To reach an increasingly global marketplace and meet its needs, we have adopted a worldwide brand. With our new LexisNexis brand, we have created a family of products with worldwide name recognition.”

The LexisNexis Group comprises four main operating units:

  • North American Legal Markets, based in Dayton, Ohio, serving legal professionals in small and large law firms, law schools and the judiciary.
  • U.S. Corporate and Federal Markets, also based in Dayton, Ohio, serving corporate, government and academic professionals. With the announcement of the new brand, CFM has also announced new names for two of its units--LexisNexis™ Document Solutions (formerly Lexis® Document Services) and LexisNexis™ Academic & Library Solutions (formerly Congressional Information Services).
  • Martindale-Hubbell, based in New Providence, New Jersey, the definitive source of information on attorneys and law firms, available on the internet at martindale.comsm and lawyers.comsm, as well as on CD-ROM, via the LexisNexis online services, and in print form in the Martindale-Hubbell® Law Directory.
  • Operations in Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America. These include the market-leading Butterworths companies in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, Les Editions du Juris-Classeur in France, Abeledo-Perrot in Argentina, Orac in Austria and many other companies that are leaders in their markets.
“One of the many strengths of our business is that it has become more global,” Prozes said. “However, in the process it has outgrown existing brand structures. In recent years, we have significantly expanded our sales and marketing activities, and have been building our global capability and presence through acquisition and alliance. A single brand is crucial in capitalizing on our strengths as well as presenting a single face to customers to achieve a truly global presence.”

Prozes said that a global branding team took a fact-based, strategic approach in establishing the new brand by talking with hundreds of customers in markets covering over 90 percent of global revenues. Hundreds of employees worldwide also gave specific input.

“Customers have told us that we have a strong family of brands and a rich heritage on which they are based,” he said. “Going forward, our goal is to associate those attributes more closely with the LexisNexis brand so that they represent our strengths in every market in which we do business. We are therefore beginning a phased migration to the LexisNexis brand.”

The following visual changes are taking place with the launch of the new brand:

  • The hyphen is gone from the LexisNexis name to reinforce that the business is a global organization offering comprehensive content, serving customers across the legal, business, government and academic market spectrum.
  • The updated LexisNexis icon, called the “knowledge burst,” symbolizes the global markets the business serves. LexisNexis customers have described the new icon and red color scheme as “global, modern, confident, energetic and bold.” Note to editors: the new icon is available at http://www.lexisnexis.com/whatsnew/logo/.
  • The LexisNexis tagline in the U.S. is “It’s How You Know,” conveying the business’s role in providing authoritative, dependable information.
The new brand icon will be launched to customers in an advertising campaign beginning in early June.

Two Businesses Renamed Within Corporate and Federal Markets

The Corporate and Federal Markets organization of LexisNexis also announced new names for two of its businesses.

The Congressional Information Service has been renamed LexisNexis Academic & Library Solutions to reflect its mission to serve the information needs of academia, high schools and public libraries. The organization is based in Bethesda, Maryland, and provides premier research collections and reference solutions covering a wide array of offerings in electronic and traditional media.

Lexis Document Services is now LexisNexis Document Solutions. Based in Springfield, Illinois, LDS offers nationwide public records services, with expertise in UCC-related lien searching and filing; corporate searching and filing, including registered agent services; motor vehicle titling and registration; federal document filing and retrieval services and intellectual property services. These services are marketed to commercial secured lenders, corporations, law firms, and fleet managers.
