LexisNexis Litigation Support by DolphinSearch Simplifies Electronic Document Discovery
Expansion of Strategic Alliance With DolphinSearch Provides Reliable Electronic Document Discovery Tools Designed to Increase Accuracy and Reduce Time Necessary for Trial Preparation
DAYTON, OH, July 29, 2002 - LexisNexis™, the global leader in legal, news and business information services, today announced a new litigation support tool that utilizes DolphinSearch’s patented technology to make trial preparation and electronic data discovery easier, faster and more reliable
LexisNexis Litigation Support by DolphinSearch is the only electronic discovery system that can identify, analyze and organize critical information like humans do - in context. By learning the relationships between words and concepts, DolphinSearch captures more relevant documents in a fraction of the time.
For instance, the Washington, D.C. office of a multi-national law firm was representing the plaintiffs in a case against a chemical manufacturing company accused of dumping toxic waste. As they searched through the produced documents for proof that the company was aware of these activities, the attorneys ran a search on the query “chemical poisoning streams.” DolphinSearch returned documents containing references to arsenic in ground water. The discovery of these documents was enough to force settlement of the case. DolphinSearch learned the relationship between the concepts “chemical poisoning streams” and “arsenic in ground water” simply by reading the discovery documents, thereby demonstrating its intelligence.
“LexisNexis Litigation Support enables attorneys to improve their service to clients by dramatically reducing the time and labor required for human coding and searching of discovery documents,” said Tyler Howes, senior director of product planning for LexisNexis Litigation Support. “Law firms using DolphinSearch have reported cost savings up to 55 percent as well as significant processing time savings -- as much as 67 percent. These firms have become more thorough in their trial preparation because DolphinSearch effectively captures and classifies critical information automatically, including document types and details that other electronic data discovery providers miss, like hidden cells, text under imbedded charts, formulas in spreadsheets and all metadata and attachments in emails.”
LexisNexis has teamed its vast legal expertise with DolphinSearch’s state-of-the-art technology to provide a litigation support solution that delivers unparalleled file extraction and conversion programs, automates time consuming and costly electronic discovery processes and applies intelligent search technology to relevancy and privilege reviews.
"DolphinSearch technology is well-suited for both large and small cases. Our attorneys and legal professionals are now devoting more time to strategizing the legal aspects of cases rather than reading each and every document and recording them,” said Clayton Morehead, manager of Litigation Support and Client Technology Services for the law firm of Carlton Fields.
For many years now, LexisNexis has worked closely with customers to tailor and integrate its information content and productivity tools into their daily workflow. LexisNexis Litigation Support by DolphinSearch saves law firms time and money, which in turn, saves their clients money.
LexisNexis Litigation Support products and services include:
- Data Processing – DolphinSearch Electronic Document Discovery services provide optimal security, discovery and processing of all types of electronic documents: email, spreadsheets, word processing documents, powerpoints and documents that have been scanned for optical character recognition (OCR). It maintains the relationships between emails and their attachments while tracking conversation threads. It eliminates the need to clean dirty OCR and provides formula reports for spreadsheets.
- Data Extraction – Electronic documents contain an array of data beyond what is typically visible to the eye. Extracting hidden data is key to the proper processing and discovery of electronic media. DolphinSearch’s proprietary text extractors provide for more data visibility, fewer unprocessed files and more accurate identification of duplicates.
- Analysis and Review Tools – The litigation support suite provides analysis tools that apply DolphinSearch’s True Fuzzy Concept Search to the review of electronic documents. The technology dramatically reduces the time required for litigation support personnel to identify legal or factual issues of a case in each document. It can also be used to identify privileged information in documents.
- Document Production – After processing, DolphinSearch converts documents to TIFF or PDF file formats and applies Bates numbers (unique numbers attached to each page of a document for identification) for production to opposing counsel. The auto-assisted review process reduces by as much as 80% the number of documents to be produced, saving money.
- Database Export – DolphinSearch exports the organized document set into the case management software with which firms are most familiar.
DolphinSearch technology is also available as a stand-alone component for document retrieval in a firm’s email and document management systems. About DolphinSearch
DolphinSearch has developed and patented a technology that reads text with human-like understanding. The company was founded in 1999 to advance Dr. Herbert L. Roitblat's 15 years of pioneering research into dolphins’ biological echolocation systems. The research has led to breakthroughs in techniques that mimic dolphin and human brain processes and enable computers to understand the meaning of human language.
The technology has been incorporated into the DolphinSearch Server. This query engine retrieves relevant documents about a query term, not just those containing the query term or predefined synonyms. Like humans do, it automatically learns the meaning of words and the relationships between them, based on their context. Thereafter, the technology indexes the text, metadata and attachments making them searchable with DolphinSearch’s True Fuzzy Content Search.
The DolphinSearch, Inc. home office is located at 474 East Main Street, Ventura, CA 93001. Phone: (805) 585-2102. Email: info@dolphinsearch.com. You may visit the DolphinSearch Web site at http://www.dolphinsearch.com for further information on the company and its technology.
