New HotDocs® 6.0 Software From LexisNexis Sets New Standards For Document Automation

DAYTON, OH, August 19, 2002 - LexisNexis™, the global leader in legal, news and business information services, introduced today HotDocs 6.0, a new software suite that offers unmatched document automation solutions by combining the best automation for PDF graphical forms with industry leading text document automation. In addition to PDF graphical form automation, HotDocs 6.0 also has more powerful template authoring tools, a more intuitive user interface and an open COM API (application program interface) for improved integration with other office systems.

HotDocs 6.0 is available in Standard or Professional editions, with HotDocs Professional Edition offering a number of additional template design and authoring tools. The software went on sale August 19, 2002. Customers may obtain more information online at www.hotdocs.com or by calling toll-free 1-800-500-3627.

HotDocs, with more than 400,000 users worldwide, is the leading document automation software solution. It streamlines document preparation, resulting in shorter cycle-times, lower costs, and improved document accuracy for many types of legal and business documents. The customized documents allow legal and business professionals to increase their efficiency and accuracy by eliminating repetitive data entry and storing customized document templates for repeated use.

“HotDocs is so robust that law firms and companies can use powerful new development tools to improve their efficiency by automating a wider range of documents. It is also so intuitive that users can easily and quickly begin creating new templates for frequently used documents,” said Ken Crutchfield, vice president and Chief Operating Officer for Desktop Applications at LexisNexis.

HotDocs 6.0 transforms text and PDF graphical form documents into interactive templates that prompt users for answers or that can query a database for answers. Templates are then used to create individual customized documents such as contracts, court forms, real estate forms, sales proposals, loan applications and other legal and business documents. The all-new HotDocs® PDF Advantage drives creation of templates based on PDF graphical forms. HotDocs PDF Advantage is an add-on option for HotDocs Standard Edition or HotDocs Professional Edition.

With HotDocs 6.0, users can save any document as a PDF document, which can be stored and filed electronically or emailed. Users can tap a range of automation features that HotDocs PDF Advantage offers, which allows them to:

  • Create automated PDF forms with inserted variables and forms based on form logic
  • Intuitively handle text that is too long for fields on a form
  • Insert repeating variables in multiple fields throughout a form
  • Fill forms in a logical order, instead of the order in which fields are presented.
New templates can be created quickly and easily with a number of new and enhanced features in HotDocs 6.0. The new development tools will help law firms and corporations recover their investment fast because templates are created and put into production more quickly. Also, a new user interface makes filling the forms more intuitive and faster.

The new Component Explorer makes it easier for developers to view and manage components – variables, dialogs and scripts – across a large number of template files. It offers a preview of how templates would be affected if a change were made. It also lets users alter components with a simultaneous search-and-replace capability across all templates. Additionally, users can see at a glance which components are unused and can therefore be safely deleted. Component Manager is enhanced to include a drag-and-drop interface that simplifies the process of inserting, adding and deleting variables.

A new interview dialog provides an outline of the interview questions and answers, which makes moving back-and-forth among the questions easy. Navigation buttons in the toolbar or Previous and Next buttons in the dialog pane offer two more methods to move among the questions. The interview outline is dynamic, which means outline items are added and removed depending on answers from the user.

The new and expanded integration features of HotDocs 6.0 also include an open COM API to provide better integration with workflow, case-management and other office-automation systems. The intuitive COM interface allows integrators to control most HotDocs processes, customize the user interface and call into third-party applications.
