DAYTON, OH, November 15, 2004 - LexisNexis the global leader in legal, news and business information services, today announced that the 18th Judicial Circuit Court of DuPage County Illinois has implemented the LexisNexis File & Serve e-filing service to improve court operations and help manage an increasing civil caseload.

"By implementing LexisNexis File & Serve, DuPage County is joining a growing number of courts around the country that are transforming the judicial infrastructure," said Robin Castro, Vice President of LexisNexis File & Serve, a division of LexisNexis. "The Court and law firms are gaining a new tool that really gives them greater control over the delivery, the management and the cost of filing and service of legal documents."

LexisNexis File & Serve is an Internet-based service that enables lawyers to file documents with the court and serve opposing counsel online-reducing the use of photocopiers, court runners, and the U.S. Mail. Attorneys will also be able to take advantage of extended filing deadlines since the service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Court clerks benefit from an automated intake process and judges and their law clerks have nearly real-time access to legal documents as they are filed. The service is available at no charge to the court and with a modest fee paid by attorneys for each filing and service transaction.

The DuPage project represents a significant milestone for e-filing and for LexisNexis. DuPage County is the second largest county in Illinois next to Cook County (Chicago), and is one of the larger counties in the country with nearly one million residents. The implementation of LexisNexis File & Serve in DuPage County is the first e-filing project in the state and can serve as a model for other counties.

Chief Judge Robert K. Kilander of DuPage County has put a high priority on improving court operations. "We process a significant volume of case filings and the implementation of electronic filing and of our new case management system will have a tremendous impact," Kilander said. "We will have better access to motions, exhibits and proposed orders, save on storage space, and make better use of court resources. This is good for the court, the public, and law firms," added Kilander.

Circuit Clerk Joel A. Kagann agrees that e-filing will have a positive effect on court operations and will help the legal community. "Automating and streamlining the process for managing filings will give clerks the opportunity to spend less time managing the flow of paper," said Kagann. "And law firms will not have to come down to the courthouse to file documents or to request copies."

The DuPage County project will start with certain Contract cases and then expand to the rest of Law and Arbitration cases.

To date, more than 50,000 attorneys, law firm staff, judges and clerks have registered with LexisNexis File & Serve systems across the country. Annually, over 5 million documents are filed and served through the system into over 425,000 cases across the United States. LexisNexis has implemented e-filing and/or e-service projects statewide in Colorado and Delaware; and in individual court jurisdictions in Arizona, California, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington.
