LexisNexis Launches LexisNexis JP Service
Award Announced at Storage Networking World Conference
TOKYO, Japan, April 18, 2005 - LexisNexis Japan Co., Ltd., the Japanese subsidiary of LexisNexis Group, a global leader in comprehensive and authoritative legal, news and business information, today announced the commercial launch of a new authoritative and comprehensive online legal information service in the Japanese language (http://legal.lexisnexis.jp) called LexisNexis JP.
LexisNexis Group is a member of the Reed Elsevier Group plc, a world-leading publisher and information provider.
This powerful new research tool is designed to help customers quickly and easily find cases, case commentaries and statutes, codes and laws over the Internet using a standard Web browser. The initial coverage of the LexisNexis JP database includes 206,000 judgments dating from 1862; 42,000 case commentaries as published in prestigious law journals, and all of the current 7,200 Japanese statutes, codes and laws. LexisNexis has licensed content from such highly reputable sources and journals as the Hanrei Times, Kinyu Houmu Jijo, Kinyu Shoji Hanrei and Rodo Hanrei.
"The launch of LexisNexis JP serves as a major milestone for the LexisNexis Group, signifying our commitment to the Japanese market and providing products and services which meet the specific needs of Japanese customers, as well as international customers wishing to understand the legal and regulatory environment in this country," said Miyuki Suzuki, President and Chief Executive Officer of LexisNexis Asia Pacific.
"Japan is the second largest economy in the world, and thus an important player in the international business community," Suzuki added. "As such, it is a strategic imperative for LexisNexis to have authoritative and comprehensive coverage of the rapidly evolving Japanese legal environment, to satisfy the sophisticated needs of both domestic and multi-national users."
LexisNexis JP provides a variety of search menus to allow users to find information efficiently. The service offers not only keyword search functionality, but also searches by "reference code number" or "date." Hyperlinks to related cases, statute, codes and laws, and case commentaries, facilitate the user’s ability to gain fast, convenient access to the relevant data, and to keep track of past searches that he or she has conducted. LexisNexis JP was developed using the wealth of technical expertise available within the LexisNexis global organization, in addition to extensive customer research to determine specific user requirements.
Over time, plans call for LexisNexis JP to provide customers with a broad range of Japanese legal and regulatory information, together with relevant business news, for our customers in law firms, academic institutions, government organizations and corporate legal departments.
LexisNexis believes there is a huge and growing demand for comprehensive and easy-to-access legal information, in Japan. This is because of the on-going process of judicial reform and deregulation, such as the planned introduction of the jury system for criminal trials in a few years' time, and the foundation of new law schools, designed to increase the number of qualified lawyers and barristers in the country. In addition, it is worth noting that the number of cases of litigation has been rising exponentially, which is a marked sign of the Japanese business community’s changing attitude to conflict resolution.
LexisNexis opened an office in Japan in 1999, and quickly established itself as a high quality and trusted source of international legal, news and business information for law firms, corporate, government and academic end users, via hardcopy, CD-ROM formats, online and tailored applications.
"LexisNexis sees Japan as a significant opportunity for global market expansion" said Managing Director of LexisNexis Japan, Osamu Ueda. "We have been increasing our investment in this market to build our brand, reputation and presence, and the initial launch of LexisNexis JP is a key step in this process. Last year, we also started our Japanese language publishing operation with the release of several books covering such hot topics as copyright law and unfair competition, and we plan to extend this further with the publication of other compelling titles for legal and accounting professionals."
