NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ, March 16, 2007 - LexisNexis, the leading provider of client development solutions for the legal profession, today announced that it has awarded its LexisNexis® Martindale-Hubbell® Legal Fellowship to the Indigenous Law & Policy Center (ILPC) at the Michigan State University College of Law.

The $15,000 grant from LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell will be used to help underwrite the costs of several important educational and student recruitment initiatives at the ILPC, an organization that provides competent and inexpensive legal services to tribal governments in an effort to assist them in attaining their judicial and governmental goals.

The fellowship will defray the costs of the 3rd Annual Indigenous Law Conference, hosted by the ILPC on March 16th and 17th, a newly created Indigenous Law and Policy Speakers Series, ILPC law student participation in the National Native American Law Student Moot Court Competition (held on February 16th and 17th), and a summer 2007 workshop to recruit Native American students to attend law school.

The LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell Legal Fellowship is a unique program that promotes education, the practice of public interest law and diversity in the legal profession.

“Less than one-half of one percent of lawyers in the United States are Native American, even though there are 562 federally recognized tribes in the U.S. and still more petitioning for recognition,” said Matthew L.M. Fletcher, assistant professor at Michigan State University College of Law and director of the ILPC.  “We’re gratified that Martindale-Hubbell has recognized the importance of our work by making an investment in the future of the legal profession and helping us to promote diversity.  Moreover, as an organization with limited access to outside financial support, these funds from Martindale-Hubbell come at a particularly important time to help us continue our work.”

The LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell Legal Fellowship awards two $15,000 grants each year – one in the summer and one in the winter – to individuals or associations whose applications are selected by the company’s Legal Fellowship committee.  Funding for the Legal Fellowship is generated by sales from the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review RatingsSM Acknowledgements program.  As part of the company’s exclusive alliance with Universal Recognition LLC, a wide range of products are available for attorneys with Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings who wish to showcase their professional standing.  These include Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings crystal certificates, wall plaques and certificate marquees.

The deadline for the next fellowship is June 20, 2007, with the grant award to be announced in the summer.  For more information or to complete and submit the application for a fellowship grant, please go to
