WASHINGTON, DC, August 05, 2005 - LexisNexis, a leading provider of legal, news, business information and risk management services, presented an educational symposium on best practices for data management at the Defense Intelligence Analysis Center at the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Open source collection and analysis have been of increasing importance to the intelligence community in the war against terrorist organizations like Al Qaeda. Open source information is frequently publicly available, less expensive to collect and often more current and regularly updated than information obtained through alternate means. The symposium covered a wide range of data collection and management issues, including building and managing the information supply chain, data fusion, integrating open source and classified data for "all-source" analysis and the policy and privacy implications of open source collection and analysis.

The unclassified symposium, held on August 4, was conducted in cooperation with the Joint Military Intelligence College Foundation and was entitled, "Commercial Best Practices for Open Source Collection and Analysis."

"As a trusted information partner to the government, corporate and legal sectors for over 30 years, LexisNexis has developed deep expertise and experience in building and managing information supply chains and developing information solutions that enable organizations to make expeditious, efficient and effective decisions," said Norm Willox, managing director, LexisNexis Special Services Inc. "The symposium was an opportunity for LexisNexis to share with the intelligence community the best practices that have evolved over time in the commercial world that can enhance all-source analysis."

"This symposium has proved invaluable to the students of the college by enhancing their education in the area of open source data management and enabling them to exploit the expertise of LexisNexis and information technologies in support of U.S. national security and intelligence reform," stated Charlotte A.M. Gallagher, executive director of the JMIC Foundation and alumna of the College. "I look forward to the second annual best-practices symposium and to other educational opportunities provided by the LexisNexis team."
