LexisNexis® U.S. To Acquire Applied Discovery®
Acquisition Further Broadens LexisNexis Offerings to Legal Industry with E-Discovery

July 11, 2003, Dayton, OH — LexisNexis U.S., a leading provider of legal, news and business information services, said today it has entered into an agreement to acquire Applied Discovery®, a Seattle-based provider of Web-based electronic discovery services to top U.S. law firms, large corporations and government agencies. Applied Discovery's services include data gathering, media restoration, data processing, online review and document production and reporting. LexisNexis is a member of Reed Elsevier Group plc [NYSE: ENL; NYSE: RUK].

"Litigators and corporate attorneys continue to look for more efficient alternatives to the traditional paper or scanning and coding methods of discovery. LexisNexis is committed to electronic discovery and providing litigators with a comprehensive portfolio of products and services to meet their discovery needs," said Lou Andreozzi, president and CEO of North American Legal Markets at LexisNexis. "Applied Discovery's success in this quickly-expanding industry illustrates the strength of their services and electronic discovery knowledge. The combination of these attributes and our comprehensive legal research service will allow us to continue on our strategic path of offering a broader range of information services and further our goal of being the indispensable information partner to legal and professional customers."

Litigation related activities comprise a significant portion of legal activities for law firms, corporations and government agencies. Discovery, the process that allows each party to discover facts and information about each other party's case in a legal proceeding, is a major component and an expensive part of that process. Corporations and their antitrust attorneys also utilize the company's services in the "second request" phase of antitrust investigations. Applied Discovery's technology platform and professional services allow customers to improve costs and results over traditional methods of document review.

"As this industry has exploded in the past few years, Applied Discovery has become well-established as a leading electronic discovery service provider to the country's top attorneys," said Richard Corbett, co-founder, executive vice president and general counsel, Applied Discovery. "We're excited to join another industry leader and become part of the LexisNexis team that has been creating innovative products and services for the legal business for 30 years. LexisNexis shares our philosophy of providing nothing less than the best products, services and support, and the combined resources of the companies will provide far greater opportunities for our customers."

Applied Discovery currently counts 35 of the top 50 U.S. law firms as customers. In addition, its products and services have applications in other industries served by LexisNexis, such as financial services, healthcare, government and insurance, all which require the efficient, high-volume processing of electronic files with a document review platform. Many "Global 1000" companies currently use Applied Discovery's products and services to manage a growing amount of electronic data in litigation, government investigations and antitrust document review. The company has a processing capacity of more than three million pages per day, with documents typically ready for review within 48 hours.

Applied Discovery's services will complement the existing LexisNexis e-Discovery offerings such as e-Discovery Solutions powered by DolphinSearch by providing customers an expanded range of electronic discovery choices from LexisNexis. They also augment LexisNexis' extensive array of litigation support tools including its flagship research products, online access to the nation's courts and advanced searching and notification capabilities by CourtLink®, Shepard's® Citation Service and SmartLinxTM.

Applied Discovery will become part of the North American Legal Markets division of LexisNexis, which includes operating units, LexisNexis CourtLink and Martindale-Hubbell.

Applied Discovery has 75 employees in offices located in Seattle, WA, Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston and Dallas. They offer an unmatched online review application, award-winning customer service and high capacity production capabilities.

LexisNexis U.S., which created the first commercial online legal research service 30 years ago, employs more than 9,000 employees across the U.S. and Canada, including Seattle.

Financial terms of the deal are not being disclosed. The transaction is subject to the customary regulatory review.
