Applied Discovery Announces Enhanced Electronic Document Search Functionality
Allows Legal Professionals to Target Critical Evidence with Unparalleled Precision

Oct. 8, 2002, Seattle, WA — Applied Discovery Inc., the leading provider of electronic discovery services, today announced the release of pioneering search capabilities within its Online Review service. The new functionality, coupled with Applied Discovery’s current array of electronic document search tools, expedites the isolation and review of critical evidence pertinent to legal claims, such as email correspondence, and consequently further entrenches the company’s technology leadership position in the electronic discovery field.

The expanded performance of Applied Discovery’s search engine allows users to execute electronic evidence search operations in an unprecedented manner. Highlights of the company’s enhanced electronic document search functionality include the following:

Detailed Meta Data Searches

Utilizing Applied Discovery’s Online Review service, users can search document meta data by precise criteria, including file type; email subject line or document file name; original file path; document author; email distribution (including to, from, cc and bcc); document custodian; and date ranges (including date sent, date received and last modification date). Search results can then be sorted by various select terms, including document custodian, file path, last modification date, document identification number, parent/child relationship, number of pages, and file size.

Customizable “Family Group” Searches

Applied Discovery’s expanded search functionality also provides the ability to narrow “family group” searches to locate only the “children” or “parents” in email and attachment relationships, enabling users to quickly sort through groups of email messages separate from attachments. Conversely, users can opt to locate all documents contained within a family group as part of a single document search set. For example, a search for the word “performance” could return the whole family of documents — not just email messages that included the word “performance,” but also any documents attached to the messages.

These enhanced search features allow legal professionals to quickly pinpoint crucial evidence and organize key documents for legal review in the most time efficient and cost effective manner. The ability to isolate key documents early in the due diligence and document review process can be instrumental in developing a party’s filing and defense of legal claims, and furthermore allows companies involved in merger or acquisition deals to quickly assess various elements of the pending business negotiation.

“We are excited about these additions to our already robust search functionality,” said Scot Fordyce, director of research and development at Applied Discovery. “Some of the features are a direct result of client feedback, and others are enhancements to pre-existing capabilities. We will continue to build on these new developments, and clients should anticipate other key advances in the near future.”

As the document sets of Applied Discovery’s clients have continued to grow — routinely exceeding 1 million pages of documentation in a single case — the company has responded with continual improvements to performance and functionality of its technology. The expanded search functionality complements other notable features of Applied Discovery’s service, including the following:
  • Display of nearly any electronic file type in a uniform PDF format
  • Searchable online annotations
  • Online redaction
  • email conversation threads
  • Single-click links between email messages and attachments
  • De-duplication of redundant documents
  • One-step search and classification document organization
  • Multiparty and multisite collaboration from any computer with an Internet connection
“The ability to conduct sophisticated searches is a hallmark of Applied Discovery’s Online Review service,” Fordyce said. “While there has been some confusion in the marketplace about so-called context or natural language services that tout ‘human-like’ search capabilities on abstract topics, we find that what clients truly want is an accurate tool for pinpointing the key documents that comprise the heart of the case. These new capabilities fulfill that need, offering our clients an unprecedented strategic advantage.”
