Management Team

LexisNexis Applied Discovery provides a full line of electronic discovery services to the legal industry. Applied Discovery has been setting the standard for electronic discovery excellence since the late 1990s. LexisNexis acquired Applied Discovery in July 2003. As part of the acquisition, Applied Discovery became part of the North American Legal Markets division of LexisNexis.

Michael J. Simmons | Vice President & Managing Director
Michael Simmons is vice president and managing director at LexisNexis® Applied Discovery®. In this role, Mr. Simmons is responsible for overseeing the company's strategic planning and managing all operations related to the company's clients.

Mr. Simmons has held executive posts in business development, financial strategies and operational management for more than 30 years. Specializing in growth companies, Mr. Simmons brings a successful background in software, including significant experience leading financial and ERP application companies such as IPNet Solutions, Platinum Software (now Epicor) and PowerCerv. Prior to joining Applied Discovery, Mr. Simmons was global chief executive officer at ADERANT, the industry-leading ERP software for law firms. He is the founder of Impact Software Solutions, a software firm that assists clients in building sustainable growth, strategic excellence and transferable value.

Simmons earned a M.B.A. from Rutgers University and a B.S. in economics from St. Peter’s College. He is a United States Marine Corps veteran, having served in Vietnam.

Larry Alves | Vice President, Finance
Larry Alves is vice president of finance at LexisNexis® Applied Discovery®. He brings to Applied Discovery years of experience as a senior financial executive in entrepreneurial and large corporate environments. Mr. Alves has a broad financial background with both control and treasury functions in domestic and international operations.

Prior to joining Applied Discovery, Mr. Alves was vice president of finance and chief financial officer at ADERANT, a leading supplier of business and financial software for legal firms. Mr. Alves is a seasoned veteran having served as CFO in leading technology companies, in both the software and electronic components sectors. He was a founding officer of Western Digital Corporation and international controller at GT&E.

Mr. Alves earned a B.S. business administration with a major in accounting from Northeastern University.

Courtney Ingraffia Barton, Esq. | Vice President, Industry Relations
Courtney Ingraffia Barton is vice president of industry relations at LexisNexis® Applied Discovery®. In this role, she works with law firms, government organizations, corporations and industry leaders to educate the legal community on the continually evolving case law and technology of electronic discovery.

Prior to joining Applied Discovery, Ms. Barton was a trial attorney with the United States Department of Justice, where she oversaw a docket of complex environmental enforcement matters. Before that, she was a senior associate with Arnold & Porter in Washington, D.C. where she focused on pharmaceutical and medical device litigation. While at Arnold & Porter, she spent time in-house at the Host Marriott Corporation where she was Acting Assistant General Counsel for Litigation.

Ms. Barton is a frequent author and speaker on the topic of electronic discovery. As host of the Applied Discovery E-Discovery Best Practices Courses and Corporate Counsel Summits, she educates attorneys and legal professionals on case law, the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure related to electronic discovery, document retention and compliance matters, technical issues and more.

Ms. Barton is a member of several pro bono organizations, serving as a guardian ad litem in the District of Columbia court system and working on civil rights litigation with the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. She is a member of the District of Columbia and Louisiana Bar Associations. Ms. Barton earned her B.A. from Colby College, her J.D. cum laude from Tulane Law School, and M.P.H. from Harvard University.

William Derrick | Vice President, Client Operations
William Derrick is vice president of client operations at LexisNexis® Applied Discovery®. In this role, Mr. Derrick oversees all operations including the 24 x 7 production teams. Mr. Derrick has more than 25 years of technology and operational experience.

Prior to joining Applied Discovery, Mr. Derrick was executive vice president of global operations at Global Market Insite, the leading provider of software and services to the market research industry. Previously, Mr. Derrick was the chief information officer at Corixa Corporation, a leading biotechnology firm in Seattle. Mr. Derrick’s other roles have included vice president of ecommerce at Getty Images, vice president of operations at Wall Data, Inc., and multiple operational roles at Prodigy Services Company in New York.

Mr. Derrick earned a B.S. in engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point, and a M.B.A. from Pace University in New York.

Ira Herman | Vice President, Support Services
Ira Herman is vice president of support services at LexisNexis® Applied Discovery®. In this role, Mr. Herman is responsible for the client services group, a team comprised of legal and technology professionals committed to providing the highest level of account and project management to the nation’s top law firms and corporations. The team works closely with clients to define specific information requirements and coordinates the activities of the company to ensure the timely and accurate delivery data for review and use in the discovery phase of litigation.

Prior to joining Applied Discovery, Mr. Herman was senior vice president at ADERANT, a practice management software provider, where he was responsible for its global support, human resources, and information technology functions. He has more than 10 years of such experience in the technology industry and over 20 years of operational management experience in the manufacturing of high technology products. Mr. Herman previously held senior management positions, including the role of president at both Meade Instruments and Smartflex Systems.

Mr. Herman is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering and formerly served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy.

Gary Oberg | Vice President, IT & Development
Gary Oberg is vice president of information technology and product development at LexisNexis® Applied Discovery®. In this role, Mr. Oberg is responsible for managing the strategic direction, development, security and infrastructure of the Applied Discovery award-winning Online Review Application.

Prior to joining Applied Discovery, Mr. Oberg was vice president of global product development and IT at ADERANT, a leading supplier of business and financial software for legal firms. Mr. Oberg has more than 30 years of experience managing commercial software development and has held similar positions at IPNet Solutions, a leading provider of B2B software; PowerCerv Technologies, an ERP and financial software company; and Rockwell Automation. Mr. Oberg also founded Carolina Consulting, helping SME companies with product strategy, planning and execution.

Mr. Oberg earned a B.S. in business administration from Ball State University.

Jon Resnick, Esq. | Vice President, Sales and Field Operations
Jon Resnick is vice president of sales and field operations at LexisNexis® Applied Discovery®. In this role, Mr. Resnick oversees the largest sales and consulting team in the e-discovery industry comprised of former practicing attorneys, legal professionals and technology experts who are dedicated to working with clients from the nations top law firms and corporations navigate the challenges of complex discovery matters.

Prior to joining Applied Discovery, Mr. Resnick was national sales manager for various business units of LexisNexis where he and his teams successfully managed LexisNexis accounts at Fortune 100, global professional services organizations and national law firms. He was previously director of sales in various other divisions of LexisNexis.

Prior to joining LexisNexis, Mr. Resnick worked in client development at Inside Counsel (formerly Corporate Legal Times), a leading periodical geared to in-house, Corporate Counsel. Mr. Resnick also worked at Latham and Watkins, LLP.

Mr. Resnick is a licensed Illinois attorney and a member of several bar associations. He earned his J.D. from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago and a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

David A. Weber | Vice President, Product Marketing
David Weber is vice president of product marketing at LexisNexis® Applied Discovery®. In this role, Mr. Weber is manages the Applied Discovery innovative portfolio and go-to-market strategies with a special focus on delivering exceptional client experience, continuous innovation, and highly relevant, accountable, and untraditional marketing.

Prior to joining Applied Discovery, Mr. Weber was vice president of products at ADERANT, a leading supplier of business and financial software for legal firms. He has successfully developed and implemented worldwide marketing and product direction strategies for technology companies serving businesses of all sizes in a variety of industries. He brings extensive knowledge of business applications architecture and design coupled with real-world implementation experience from key product management and consulting positions with ADERANT, INOVIS (formerly IPNet Solutions), Epicor Software (formerly Platinum Software), Odetics Broadcast and Arthur Andersen & Co.

Mr. Weber earned a B.A. in economics from Pomona College.
