The LexisNexis® services have the essentials you need for understanding the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005. Here are some examples:

Read the Full Text of the Public Law—or Just Sections of Interest
To retrieve the full text of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005, U.S. Public Law 109-8:

  1. Click the GET A DOCUMENT tab.
  2. ENTER: 109 us 8.
  3. Click GET.

The law is more than 200 screen pages, so use the FOCUS™ feature to pinpoint topics of interest. For example, to find sections of the law addressing cross-border bankruptcies:

In FOCUS terms box at the top of your screen, ENTER: cross! /5 border and click GO. Now you can move directly to the sections that discuss cross-border bankruptcies.

Use the term navigation box. On the bottom right side of the screen, find the number of term occurrences, e.g., 8. To move from 1 to 8 quickly, ENTER: 1 in the box next to Terms. Then click GO. Now you’re at the first occurrence of your search terms. To move to the next occurrence, click the right arrow. To move back to an occurrence, click the left arrow.

When you select this source, a table of links is displayed automatically. Choose the link you need. For example, select the Bill-Tracking Report link and find the bill’s:

  • milestone status dates;
  • sponsors and co-sponsors;
  • legislative action summaries and links to the Congressional Record discussions of those activities
  • committee and amendment votes

Move to the Congressional Record. Just click a link, e.g., 151 Cong. Rec. S 2416. Once in the Congressional Record, use the FOCUS feature to find discussions on a specific topic, e.g., ENTER: credit /3 counsel! To exit the FOCUS feature, just click the exit FOCUS link.
 
Select the Congressional Hearing Transcripts link from the 2005 BANKRUPTCY LEGISLATION table and find Federal Document Clearing House Congressional Testimony documents. To find testimony regarding the effects of lawyer advertising on the personal bankruptcy rate, use the FOCUS feature. ENTER: lawyer OR attorney /10 ad OR advertis!

Select the Congressional Vote Reports link from the 2005 BANKRUPTCY LEGISLATION table and move to House and Senate final passage votes as well as votes on motion for cloture. Select the Congressional Record Transcripts link from the 2005 BANKRUPTCY LEGISLATION table and move to highly relevant 2005 Congressional Record House, Senate and Extension documents. These documents were pinpointed for you with LexisNexis SmartIndexing Technology™. To narrow your research to transcript sections that discuss the effects of the bankruptcy legislation on small businesses, use the FOCUS feature. ENTER: small business.
