Maximize Your Results with the FOCUS™ Feature

The FOCUS feature provides a simple and efficient means of getting to the information you need, be it an on-point case or primary source document, or an important fact that can strengthen your case.

The FOCUS feature allows you to narrow your results without having to actually perform another search. This makes it possible to start with a search request that’s broad enough to maximize your results, and then use the FOCUS feature to pinpoint the exact information you need.

The FOCUS feature is remarkably simple to use. When you display your search results, the FOCUS bar displays automatically at the top of the screen. Your original request is displayed in the FOCUS Terms box. To narrow your results:

  1. Type your additional terms in the open field of the box using a connector to add them to your original search.

  2. Click Go.

You can also conduct your FOCUS search in selected documents rather than all the documents you originally retrieved. Simply place a check mark in the box next to the documents in which you want to search and click Selected Documents from the Search Within pull-down menu on the right side of the FOCUS bar.

If you prefer not to display the FOCUS bar, click the small minus sign (-) in the red box above the Text Only link. You can then access the FOCUS search template by clicking the FOCUS link at the top of the page.
