The idea that working longer hours is compromising the health and safety of workers should be balanced with the prospect of firms going out of business. ----- ----- Management briefing - The Times, 07/11/2008, p.75: A report has found that bullying in the workplace is rising, with the public sector seeing the most incidents. The Government estimates that bullying costs the UK economy GBP13.7 billion, with 100 million days in productivity lost every year. ----- ----- Taxpayers robbed by a mad culture of compensation - Daily Express, 07/11/2008, p.10: Comment: Public funds are being overburdened by an increasing number of expensive compensation payouts. Schools paid out GBP2million last year to pupils for minor playground injuries that should be considered an ordinary part of growing up. ----- ----- European sales help Latchways - Financial Times, 07/11/2008, p.24: Safety systems specialist Latchways has reported strong revenue growth in Europe. Chief executive David Hearson said the UK was the most compliant country with health and safety legislation, but other EU members were "slowly picking it up". ----- ----- Workman dies after gas canisters turn to missiles - Evening Standard, 06/11/2008, p.8: A construction worker was killed and six others seriously injured when gas bottles turned into missiles and flew around a warehouse in Welwyn Garden City. The canisters were part of the fire extinguisher system which became dangerous when a valve was sheared off. -----
