Candidates in MidTerm Elections will Feel Repercussions of Bank Bailout
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who voted to bail out Wall Street through the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) are haunted by that decision. At the time, the vote was hailed as the only way to avert economic collapse. Although republicans are predicting a backlash against Democrats in the fall for passing health care reform, the New York Times reports that the bipartisan TARP vote is receiving more emphasis in a year of strong anti-incumbent sentiment.
Republican incumbents are facing accusations of promoting big government and are seeing the rise of Tea Party candidates and other conservative challengers. Even though banks have paid back large portions of the money which was credited with helping prevent an economic meltdown, the Times reports that support for TARP is becoming one of the biggest issues incumbent candidates are facing in the 2010 mid term elections.
