Former Regions Financial General Counsel R. Alan Deer Joins Balch & Bingham As Partner
BIRMINGHAM -- Balch & Bingham announced that former Regions Financial Corporation General Counsel R. Alan Deer has joined the firm as a partner in its Corporate & Securities and Financial Institutions Practice Groups. After serving as outside counsel for almost 10 years for Regions, then known as First Alabama, Mr. Deer joined the corporate legal department at Regions in 1997, rising to the position of executive vice-president, general counsel and corporate secretary of the company in 2003. As Regions' General Counsel, he developed extensive experience in bank regulatory issues and public company representation, and was actively involved in the institution's multi-state expansion through mergers and acquisitions, providing legal oversight for mergers and other financial transactions valued in excess of $15 billion. He played a key role in Regions' growth and transformation into one of the top 10 financial services institution in the nation.
Named one of the Top 100 People in Banking & Finance by the Birmingham Business Journal in 2004, Deer has made a name for himself as a highly regarded lawyer in his field. He is a member of the American, Alabama and Birmingham Bar associations, a member and former chairperson of Banking Law Planning Committee of the Alabama Bar Institute for Continuing Legal Education, and a former corporate representative to the Financial Services Roundtable, an executive forum for leaders of the financial services industry. In addition to his professional commitments, Mr. Deer is an adjunct professor at the Cumberland Law School at Samford University in Birmingham, where he teaches banking law.
Mr. Deer received his Juris Doctorate in 1988 from the University of Alabama and earned his Bachelor of Science with emphasis in Accounting from Auburn University in 1985.
