Dr. John E. Murray, Jr.

Chancellor & Professor of Law, Duquesne University

Dr. John Murray is as familiar with a jazz sideman as he is a journalistic sidebar, and can just as deftly tickle the ivories as he can quote Corbin on Contracts. His curriculum vitae defies having enough time to accomplish all he does, yet the Duquesne University Chancellor and former President and Dean explains his ongoing body of work by stating his belief, We are all put here to make it better, whatever "it" is.

The professional "it" for Dr. Murray is what he always wanted to do: Teach and write. He authored 19 books, op-eds and articles, treatises, classroom books, teaching manuals, and law review articles (that have been cited in U.S. courts in every jurisdiction). In addition to his renowned Murray on Contracts and Murray, Cases and Materials on Contracts, he authored supplements to the Corbin multi-volume treatise as well as revising one of the volumes. Recently, Dr. Murray applied his vast contract law expertise and scholarship to Corbin on Contracts Desk Edition distilling the 89 chapters of Corbin on Contracts to a stand-alone, single-volume. He completed this project in one year, while maintaining a full-time teaching schedule, and self-effacingly summed up the work as an enjoyable experience.

Equally enjoyable for Dr. Murray is serving the civic and charitable communities: Allegheny County committees, the Sister Thea Bowman Foundation, and the Spiritan Worldwide Foundation to name but a few. And if there is an alternative "it" for this very active gentleman, it could well be playing Duke compositions on piano during cocktail hour.
