Can There Be Any Expectation Of Privacy Anymore?

The New York Times is reporting that the State Department passport files of all three remaining presidential candidates were improperly accessed multiple times by Department employees. The motivation behind the breach appears to be idle curiosity, but it would be naïve to conclude that similar breaches would not or could not be committed for malicious purposes. Nor is this a first-time occurrence; the Times notes that then-president candidate Bill Clinton’s passport file was improperly accessed in 1992. How is it that the State Department could not learn a lesson from that incident? With identity theft becoming more prevalent by the day, this apparent lack of security in our confidential information simply feeds the belief that we are all sitting ducks and, worse, that the federal government isn’t to be trusted.
