  • The Department of Human Services adopted emergency amendments to the OIG’s investigations of alleged abuse or neglect in state-operated facilities and community agencies (59 Ill Adm code 50; 33 ill reg13489) implementing public act 96-407.  This covers financial exploitation, mental, physical, and sexual abuse.
  • See AARP Oct 2009 in regard to the high cost of dying: get a price quote and read the funeral contract; be careful with a Medicaid qualified prepaid policy; can you or should you transfer life insurance to the funeral home; vertical settlements; and more. 
  • A substitution of judges in a Cook County guardianship matter should be heard by another judge, according to the Illinois Supreme Court (In re Estate of Mary Ann Wilson).
  • Insurers are providing new products that combine long term care insurance with either life insurance or annuities. (See The Elder Law Report volume xxi number 2009)
  • Since the Medicare D program came into effect, i.e. from 2003 to 2008, prices for 112 specialty drugs increased by more than 50%.
