Great attendance & Q&A resulting from Colorado Paralegal Certification Class (May 11th at COBAR)

The Colorado Bar Association, 1900 Grant St, Denver, CO co-sponsored a paralegal certification training class on LexisNexis® File & Serve. Attendance was near capacity. The agenda consisted of the following:

  • Summary of the current environment of eFiling Our new “Community” site with current events, blogs, etc
  • Demonstration of how to initiate a new case Demonstration of how to file/serve in an existing case
  • Where to find the official service within LexisNexis File & Serve (Inbox) How to set up your litigation teams in LexisNexis File & Serve (Preferences)
  • Convenience services offered by LexisNexis File & Serve
  • Where to find important information, training classes (Resource Center)

The following is a Q&A from the class.

  • Q. What is the cost to be part of the Community site?
  • A. No cost, free of charge
  • Q. What happens to my transaction if I lose internet or power in the middle of my filing?
  • A. The system automatically saves your work. You can also manually save your work by clicking on the “Save and Close” button. In either case, to get back to your filing, click on the Saved Transaction sub-tab under the Filing and Service tab.
  • Q. What are the costs associated with eFiling and eService?
  • A. The system is priced on a transactional basis. There is no monthly rate, no cost to have a user ID. If you don’t use the system, you’re not billed. The cost per transaction is: District Court - $6.00 to file 7.50 to serve County Court - $6.85 per case (not per transaction) 7.50 to serve
  • Q. Do I have to eServe via LexisNexis File & Serve?
  • A. The State has mandated eService through LexisNexis File & Serve when the opposing counsel is a user of LexisNexis File & Serve. On the Service tab, the system will indicate “E-Service” to show users of the system. If the indication shows U.S Mail, you have the option to send yourself or you can use LexisNexis File & Serve to print, copy, stuff envelopes, attach postage, and get to the post office. There is, however, an additional charge.
  • Q. If my filing is rejected by the court, for whatever reason, do I still have to pay the transactional fees.
  • A. Yes. The situation is similar to having to send a courier a second time because of a rejection.
  • Q. Can I, as a paralegal, be notified of official service on more than one attorney in my firm?
  • A. You can be notified/copied on official service on any/all attorneys within your firm. Use the “Preferences” area of the system to establish which attorneys’ notification should also be sent to you.
  • Q. When is the next “hands on” training?
  • A. We do not offer a “hands on” training session. We do, however, offer to come to your firm for groups of 6 or more.
