Jon Hyman applies his nearly 15 years of experience to provide proactive and results-driven solutions to employers' workforce problems.
He primarily concentrates his practice in the representation of companies in employment disputes, including litigation with terminated employees and disputes over trade secrets and non-competition agreements. His representation extends beyond the courtroom, into various state and federal administrative agencies. He supplements his employment practice with complex commercial matters, such as fiduciary and shareholder litigation and alcohol franchise disputes.
Complementing his litigation practice, Jon also advises individuals and companies on a wide-range of employment, human relations, and labor-relations issues. Jon serves an "outside in-house counsel" role for businesses that lack an in-house labor & employment attorney. In this role, Jon drafts policies and handbooks, audits HR and wage and hour practices and procedures, and advises companies on day-to-day HR issues such as employee discipline, terminations, workplace investigations, and the drafting and implementation of social media policies. This role also frequently requires Jon's service as an author and speaker on myriad employment-related issues.
Jon is the author of the nationally recognized Ohio Employer's Law Blog,which the ABA has commended as one of the top five labor and employment blogs in the country for 2010, and one of the top 100 legal blogs overall. Using the social media experience he gained as an early-adopter, Jon is the author of the book, Think Before You Click: Strategies for Managing Social Media in the Workplace, from Thompson Publishing. Jon serves as a frequent source for the local and national media on employment law issues, having been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, National Law Journal, Business Insurance Magazine, Crain's Cleveland Business, Inside Counsel, and Lawyer's USA. Jon also writes as a contributing editor to Business Management Daily and is the editor of its HR Specialist Ohio Employment Law Newsletter. Jon also lends his expertise as a speaker on myriad employment law topics, most recently presenting a half-day seminar on social media and employment law, and other presentations on the ADA, the FMLA, workplace technology, and harassment. Jon also serves on the Employment Law Committee of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, offering his expertise to the drafting of legislation crucial to Ohio's businesses.
Super Lawyers named Jon an Ohio Rising Star in the area of Employment Law for 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2011. The HR Examiner named Jon one of the top 25 digital HR influencers for 2011.
Jon is admitted to practice in the State of Ohio, in addition to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, the United States District Courts for the Northern District of Ohio, Southern District of Ohio, the Northern District of Oklahoma, and Northern District of Illinois, and the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio. He is a 1997 honors graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Law and a 1994 honors graduate of Binghamton University.
