Jim Thomas

Owner & Director, Minor & Brown PC

Known for dedication to his clients and passion for his community, Jim Thomas takes pride in a balanced perspective that keeps work enjoyable and business and community sustainable.  From untangling day-to-day issues that can confound businesses, to realizing long-term strategies in the purchase or sale of a business or real estate, Jim strives to be more than just a great legal advisor.  Manufacturers, distributors, construction companies, publishers, service companies, and even other law firms are among those counting on Jim's expertise, integrity, responsiveness and sense of humor to help them advance their goals.

Jim combines law, business and community in his blog No Funny Lawyers, his "human view of law for human-owned businesses" recognized for two years running by publisher Lexis-Nexis as one of the country's top business law blogs, and in The Huffington Post.  Jim also speaks on issues relevant to Colorado business, ranging from key employee incentives to exit planning to the legal pitfalls in social media.  Jim's experience with the business uses of social media-Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and blogging-was featured in the February 2011 The Docket magazine published by the Denver Bar Association.

Jim is active in the community, investing his time, money and passion in a vibrant future for Colorado, efforts which earned him a nomination as Corporate Citizen of the Year in 2011 from The Denver Business Journal.  Kids are a particular concern for Jim, as evidenced by his leadership roles with Colorado Children's Chorale, Kempe Children's Foundation, The Children's Hospital Foundation, Denver East High School, Stanley British Primary School, Washington Park Early Learning Center, and the Denver Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  Additionally, Jim has served on the selection committees for the National Philanthropy Day in Colorado Awards and the "Be More" Award from Rocky Mountain PBS.

Knowing that leaders create leverage, Jim is a proud participant in and supporter of community leadership efforts such as the Denver Metro Chamber's Leadership Denver (2004, the official Best Class Ever), Leadership Exchange, Legacy Denver, and the new-in-2011 Colorado Experience; the Downtown Denver Partnership; and National Arts Strategies.  A member of Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, Jim has served his church in numerous capacities, from chairing its Pastor Nominating Committee to performing in its musicals.

After receiving his undergraduate degree magna cum laude from Texas A&M University in 1980, Jim attended and graduated with Honors from The University of Texas School of Law in 1983.  Immediately following their graduation, Jim married fellow law student Candace Wolhart and moved to Denver.  Their daughters Genevieve and Olivia are the center of Jim's personal time.  He enjoys cooking, camping, hiking, skiing, photography, and bicycling, especially tandem cycling with his wife.
