(CICs) have administered and moderated this forum for providing
solutions to Time Matters, Billing Matters, and PCLaw users' problems.
It's been a great run, but even good things come to an end. Effective
November 30th, we are no longer accepting posts to this community.

LexisNexis
is now hosting a Law Firm Practice Management community that will serve
the needs of Time Matters, Billing Matters, PCLaw and Juris users. To
join, go to pmcommunity.lexisnexis.com.
In the new community you can ask questions of the LexisNexis team, get
answers from other users and CICs, submit your suggestions, access
product help documentation and get the latest updates on product news
and releases.

While the old forums will stay active as a
"read-only" resource for a time, over 3,000 topics posted to the old
forums have been copied to the new community. The old topics are all
dated 10/1/2012 and are marked: Historical Forum Content. You can search
using a single term or narrow your search using multiple words (not
case-sensitive) in quotes, for example: “tm mobility”. There is a wealth
of information in these posts.

Anyone can read and search the
new Community without signing up, but we encourage you to sign up so
that you, too, can post questions, ideas, and answers.

Wells and I
want to thank all the CICs who have volunteered so much of their time
to assist the end users, especially the CIC moderators. This has been an
invaluable resource for many Time Matters, Billing Matters, and PCLaw
users, and it would not have worked without their dedication to
assisting our community of users.

They tried the standard workstation level unchecks/checks which didn't solve it.

They looked in COM Add-ins and couldn't find LN anywhere (active or disabled).

I asked them to Add adxloader from the COM Add-ins screen, but when they double clicked on adxloader from the LN directory they received a message that they had to exit Outlook (v10). Kind of a catch 22 as they need to be in Outlook to add this dll. They had to cancel Outlook from task manager.

Wondering if I'm missing something here in terms of righting this ship?

I'm wondering if the following rings any bells. I have a cllient (TM V10) who after issuing an Adobe TM Save goes to the Matter and when he tries to open it gets a "blue ?". His assistant successfully saved the Adobe files but the attorney spent a lot of time thinking he was successfully saving them, when in fact he wasn't.

2.
Their current machines have Win XP, TM10, WP9. When a new case is opened they merge info with a WP 9 template. It works great for what they need to do.

The problem is we are upgrading all machines in the firm to meet the requirements of TM11. We are also converting all templates to MS Word templates as we have Win 7, TM10, Office 2010, and WP9 on the new machines.

I need a temporary fix to be able to use the macro for WP9 on the new machines. I understand this is unsupported but currently It performs one function that the firm needs to complete.

I was given the Registry entries for newer versions of WP but I think it is different for WP9.

Any help to get through until we finish the upgrade would be appreciated.

Time Matters and Small Business Phone System with Outlook Integration

Anyone have a recommendation or advice for a good small business phone system that may be integrated directly with Outlook/Exchange (indirectly with Time Matters).

HTML e-mail, blue text, and attached graphics

After a dozen or so years, I am throwing in the towel about using only plain text for e-mail. The world may be misguided, but I'm joining 'em :-)

I have two questions for which I cannot find answers. Assume that e-mail options (ver. 10) are set to show HTML always, both incoming and outgoing; that "safe view" is toggled on; and that I have a default signature, which is set to be included on replies/forwards as well as originating outgoing messages.

1. Replies and forwards show the signature in blue, and there is no way to start a black line above it. (Moreover, there is no way to set the color of text that originates in the TM e-mail.) I cannot be sending blue messages. How are people avoiding this?

2. The width of the signature block wrecks the line endings if I try to put a signature in a table, even with # 2 text. So I'd like to see whether it would work to put the sig in a small image that is sent along with the message. (I don't want to put in a src link that goes to the 'net.) How, if at all, can one set a default by which the program always sends a particular image file; and how does one code a reference to that file? Is there a better way to do this?

Thanks.

Template Spacing

We are using SQL 11.0. Our issue is the spacing between date entries on our invoices. If the description is only one line, there is a space between it and the next entry. However, if the description is more than one line, there is no space between the entries. Any suggestions on how to edit the template to add a space when the description is two or more line? Thanks.

Templates & Token Definitions

In response to my request for a list of definitions of the tokens available in Template Editor, I am advised by PCLaw support that

I have an interesting problem that is not specifically a Time Matters issue but I am hoping someone may have some advice.

Over the years I have created numerous MS Word Merge Templates. Using these templates has made creating of motions, discovery demands, responses, and the like very convenient and of course consistent firm wide. The templates were originally created with Word 97, 2000, or 2003.

Recently we upgraded two clients to 64 bit Win7 machines with MS Office 2010. When merged documents are created on those clients, older clients’ w/XP and Word 2003 cannot open the file. What happens on the older client is a window opens asking the user to select the proper coding to convert the file. This has not been a problem with clients that are 64 bit Win 7 and have Office 2007.

When setting up these new clients I originally had Word 2010 default save as docx. Thinking there was an issue here I installed the latest file conversion utility from Microsoft, but that made no difference. I then changed the default save to .doc files but even that didn’t work. What I discovered in troubleshooting the problem was that if I go to the new client, open the newly merged document and do a Save As and save it as a .doc then the file can be opened on the older clients. In the course of my troubleshooting I also discovered that Word documents created via the clipboard do not suffer this same odd issue. I then tried opening a merge template on the new client and doing a Save As to a .doc file but that did not solve my problem.

I am hoping that someone else has come across this and found a solution that I am not thinking of.

Thanks,

I created bills for these charges (3 different matters and clients) and zeroed out the amounts to bill and charged the costs to bad debts accounts. Zero invoices were generated however I now have entries for the original time and disbursements and matching offsetting credit entries still sitting on the work in progress report. Is there any way to remove these offsetting entries from the report while retaining the trail on PCLaw?

For instance a matter will progress in stages and it has been agreed that in stage 1 our fees will be capped at a certain value. In stage 2 the partners will bill at a certain rate, associates will bill at a certain rate. In stage 3, the partners rates changes and also the associates rates changes.

How can the above billing arrangement be accomodated in PClaw?

Billing Matters is "Sunrised"

Thomas L. LexisNexis sunrises Billing Matters.

Several
years ago, a previous management team made the decision to "sunset"
Billing Matters. This meant that it would be supported for several years
before the ending its life cycle. While the decision might have made
some business sense at the time for LexisNexis - they had just purchased
Time Matters/Billing Matters and PCLaw, both of which provide legal
time, billing and accounting functionality - it left a lot of Time
Matters and Billing Matters users disappointed to say the least. While
the time and billing functionality of Billing Matters had its warts, the
fact is that for a majority of users it was a solid billing system with
the key advantage of being integrated directly into Time Matters.

For
several years Time Matters certified consultancies like those who
volunteer on this list, as well as many Billing Matters users, lobbied
hard for the Billing Matters sunset decision to be reversed. For our
Billing Matters clients, we are glad to announce that Billing Matters
has been "sunrised" and will continue to be sold, maintained and
improved by Lexis. We look forward to continuing to work with the
development team at Lexis to improve Billing Matters' functionality.

For additional information:
