How to Use the Forums

For the past decade, Time Matters Certified Independent Consultants (CICs) have administered and moderated this forum for providing solutions to Time Matters, Billing Matters, and PCLaw users' problems. It's been a great run, but even good things come to an end. Effective November 30th, we are no longer accepting posts to this community.

LexisNexis is now hosting a Law Firm Practice Management community that will serve the needs of Time Matters, Billing Matters, PCLaw and Juris users. To join, go to pmcommunity.lexisnexis.com. In the new community you can ask questions of the LexisNexis team, get answers from other users and CICs, submit your suggestions, access product help documentation and get the latest updates on product news and releases.

While the old forums will stay active as a "read-only" resource for a time, over 3,000 topics posted to the old forums have been copied to the new community. The old topics are all dated 10/1/2012 and are marked: Historical Forum Content. You can search using a single term or narrow your search using multiple words (not case-sensitive) in quotes, for example: “tm mobility”. There is a wealth of information in these posts.

Anyone can read and search the new Community without signing up, but we encourage you to sign up so that you, too, can post questions, ideas, and answers.

Wells and I want to thank all the CICs who have volunteered so much of their time to assist the end users, especially the CIC moderators. This has been an invaluable resource for many Time Matters, Billing Matters, and PCLaw users, and it would not have worked without their dedication to assisting our community of users.

autoname does not always work

Hi Folks.

TM5 Prof. on SBS 2003 domain network with XP Prof. and Windows 7 Prof. stations. Data resides on a shared folder on an NAS server and Files folders reside on a different shared folder on the same server.

When adding a new document, autoname works as designed on some Matters but not others. At times it tries to overwrite an existing document. This started after moving the Data and Files folders to the NAS server from the SBS server.

Autoname is set up as follows: Use CFG file folder for root and Matter folder/Matter file, so that as you add a new document the sequential number should increment (i.e. &1234\1234-001.pdf, &1234\1234-002.pdf, etc.

All stations are static IP and logon script maps their T: drives to the Data folder and their U: drive to the files folder on the NAS at logon (same drives as when Data and Files were on the SBS server). CFG files point to T: for Data and U: for Files.

Any suggestions will be deeply appreciated.

I must comment the effort of the CIC forum administrators at giving it a face lift. But i'l say lets not go 2 steps forward and 5 steps backwards. First, i went through alot of ado searching for my post from older forum. Coupled with that, there were some private messages i sent to some users on the forum i just cant find them at all. How, can i locate these?

Please make it easier for us to keep track of past topics.

I am sure I am missing something, but can someone please advise how to receive these postings in digest form (ie one day's or at least several at one time) rather than individually? I receive a lot of my 'listserv' postings that way, but have not been able to determine how to do so in this forum. Thanks!!

Printing Entire Post Split Across 2 Pages

The Q&A's in these Forums are an excellent reference library of NSFAQs (Not So FAQs).

However, I have been unable to print the first portion of a post which carries over onto the following page. The latter portion prints fine, only the first portion is literally blank.

Does anyone know the correct setting(s) so that all of such a post will print out?

I am using IE7, XPPro SP2. I also tried through FireFox with no success.

Welcome to the CIC Solutions Forums for LexisNexis Practice Management (LNPM) software applications.

The mission of the CIC Forums is to focus on "tailoring the LexisNexis Practice Management applications to individual needs and developing specialized solutions." You can find this in the General Information and Protocols (GIP), which has been reprinted below for your convenience.
The CIC Solutions Forums *ARE NOT* the official support forums for LNPM products. See the FAQ below for ways to officially contact LexisNexis for Practice Management application support.
These forums were created and are run by the LNPM Certified Independent Consultants (CICs).

The most common reason for rejecting posts is the failure to include your full name, firm, city and/or state. By including name, firm name, city and state, we all know a little bit about each other that can be helpful in providing answers. You should edit your Bio, or include an automatic signature, with each of your posts. This can be done by pressing the Signed in as [your name] link in the upper right hand corner of the Forum. See the FAQ below for more about rejections.

Q: How do I first Search the Archives to see if my question has been previously asked and answered?

A: Use the Search feature found in the upper right hand corner of the Forum.

Q: Where are all the posts from the old forums for Time Matters, Billing Matters and World Server?

A: The archives of questions and answers from the old Solutions Forum are very valuable. We are working hard to make them available online and will post an announcement with how-to instructions just as soon as we can. You can save yourself a lot of time by checking these archives before posting a question here.

Q: I am confused. How do I use these new forums?

A: Click on the Help link in the upper right corner. It provides instructions for the rich new features of the CIC Solutions Forums.

Q: I understand that most people read the Forum posts on the Web, but I would like to receive answers to my questions via Email. How do I do that?

A: We recommend the use of the web interface and RSS News Readers. This type of forum software is not designed to let you fully interact using email, but does let you receive email notices of posts that might be of interest to you. You have three options for receiving email:

Subscribe to one or more Forums
Subscribe to any "thread" (a post and all its replies)
Receive notifications of replies to my posts

You can choose any or all of these options. To make them work, first be sure you are set to Receive Email:

Click on your name in the upper right corner of the Forum.
Click on your Email tab.
Select Yes for Receive Emails
Press Save Changes.

To receive all posts from a Forum:

Click on the Forum, e.g., Time Matters.
Click on the Forum Options buttons in the bottom left corner.
In Send Email, select: when new posts are added in this forum

To subscribe to a thread:

Open a thread by clicking on it in a Forum.
Click on Enable Email Subscription in the top left.

To receive notifications of replies to my posts:

Click on your name in the upper right corner of the Forum.
Click on your Email tab.
Select Yes for Enable Email Notifications...
Press Save Changes.

Q: Generally, what types of questions are appropriate for each of the three CIC Solution Forums?

A: In general, any request for advice on how to apply a feature of a LNPM product to effect a solution to a particular task, stated in a factual manner - *just* the facts.

Q: What will cause a post to be rejected?

A: The most common rejections are:

Any posts that are anonymous. You will be required to either enhance your Bio, or add a signature line, with your full name, firm name, city and state/province.
Questions relating to LNPM technical support, sales and pricing, business practices, customer service, or technical support policies.
Posts that lobby for non-existent features or program modifications, or contain editorializing, broad qualitative comments, customer complaints.

Q: Where can I read about the forum rules?

A: The forums' General Information and Protocols are posted in the Time Matters Service Center here (log in required).

As CICs who moderate this forum, our role is to help you excel in your use of the LNPM applications and thereby maximize the benefits for your practice. Setting default signature

News Reader setup, but displays no messages

I setup the newsreader in TM 7.0 to utilize the RSS feed for this forum. I copied the following URL into the News Provider setup screen:

a series of Xs

I get nothing. The provider headlines window is blank. The preview window is blank. As a test, I tried to setup the mealeys.com RSS feed, but I still get no response. Just blank windows. Any idea as to what I'm doing wrong?

I would be looking for other ways to access the forums and not trying to make the newsreader work. The web interface is easy and it can show you the posts in a "threaded" view. When you are in any thread, change the view from flat to threaded.

Outlook Express problems

I set up Outlook Express as the newsreader for my forum subscriptions. For the past two weeks, OE cannot connect with the forums to download new messages; although I have a cable connection, the connection always times out.

Has there been a change to protocols so that OE can no longer be used with this forum?

For those who would like to try an easier way of viewing posts to these forums try Bloglines. Simply open a free account and add the URL for the forum you want to monitor and you can then follow the posts without having to return to the forum itself. For the more advanced user you can use your Bloglines Bookmarklet for your respective browser.

Alternatively, you can use your Inbox or the TimeMatters NewsReader (Alt=>Shift=>N) to receive daily postings. Personally, I like the Bloglines interface and its mobile abilities (Treo700p) so I haven't played around enough with the Inbox method & I am not really a Raving Fan of the TM Newsreader yet. That said if anyone can give detailed instructions on either post-up for the knowledge base.

Final Status on NNTP

For those that want to use a NNTP reader to access the site, here is where we are:

The licenses for NNTP access are expensive.
We have a 5 user license, and will not be moving to the next level.
We have made adjustments to the server settings so that the inactivity timeout is much lower. This should mean that you will be more likely to be able to access the list via NNTP. I have had better success of late, although it isn't perfect.
You still may have problems at peak hours.
We are considering lowering the timeout value even further, such that it would require you to basically synchronize your account and do all your reading off-site. In fact, I would encourage this behavior for all NNTP users.
We will do the best we can with what we have, but your best bet is going to be web interface or RSS.

To further qualify, it seems to occur on long posts. Short ones seem to print ok. I noticed the problem trying to print Tom Caffrey's excellent checklist.

How to Reply to a Post

On the morning of 6/27/06 (virtually three days ago considering it's late afternoon on 6/30/06), I replied to Kevin Bross' post regarding IMAP e-mail. Haven't seen my post and haven't received anything from the Moderators/Administrators.

To make my post, I was in my e-mail program (Outlook Express), hit the Reply button to Kevin's message, and typed away; then hit Send. If I interpreted the FAQ, this method should have worked.

Or did I mis-interpret FAQ? Must one respond to a post by entering the Forum web site, or can one reply to a post directly from the original poster's e-mail message?

Aha. Never mind. I found the solution. There is a "Forum Options" button at the bottom of the main topics page for each of the forums. Forum Options lets you set your preference to receive e-mail from that forum. Choices are "never", "when new topics are posted in this forum" and "when new posts are posted in this forum."

Good enough, Wells, thank you. I was receiving TimeMatters and BillingMatters mail before now. I want to receive them again, but I don't want PCLaw or HotDocs mail. How do I do that?
