Lawyers.com Editor-In-Chief Offers Commentary on Zimmerman Verdict
Lawyers.com Editor-in-Chief Larry Bodine has been a popular radio show guest in recent days, appearing on stations from Florida to California in the wake of the George Zimmerman not-guilty verdict.
Since Zimmerman was found not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter, Bodine has done on-air interviews with WFTL 850AM (Fort Lauderdale, Miami and West Palm Beach, Fla.) with host Joyce Kaufman; WBAP 820AM and 96.7FM (Dallas and Fort Worth, Tex.) with The Morning News Team; KGO 810AM (San Francisco, Calif.) on The Karel Show; and KCBS (San Francisco, Calif.).
Mainstream media outlets seeking legal analysis of news events regularly turn to Lawyers.com and Bodine, who is both an attorney and a journalist. Bodine is a popular expert because of his ability to offer legal commentary, explain complicated issues to a lay audience, and provide off-the-cuff answers to both journalists' and audience members' questions.
When discussing the Zimmerman case, radio hosts relied on Bodine to help them understand how and why jurors reached their verdict.
Speaking with WFTL's Joyce Kaufman, Bodine explained: "When you go through all the evidence, there is nothing in writing or videotape or reporting that proves George Zimmerman acted out of rage. When you don't have proof, you get a not-guilty verdict."
"You could tell the media was rooting for a guilty verdict," Bodine told WBAP's Brian Eldridge and Hal Jay. "All [the media] talked about was whether [the jurors] would come back with manslaughter or second-degree murder. But in this case the jury took a look at the facts and said, 'We don't even see manslaughter here,' which is just a wrongful killing with no intent. They said it was a justifiable shooting."
Bodine also opined that recent changes in Zimmerman's appearance worked to his benefit during the trial. "I think George Zimmerman deliberately put on weight during the trial," Bodine told listeners on WBAP. "Because when those female jurors looked at some roly-poly fat guy, they don't see somebody who's an aggressor. They don't see somebody who's dangerous. They see somebody who's kind of chubby and probably afraid. And I'm guessing that's part of why the jury identified with him. Think about it. Genius."
Lawyers.com, a leading legal website for individuals and small business owners, has provided extensive coverage of the George Zimmerman case since Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin in February 2012.
"This case is going to go down in history like Lizzie Borden in 1892 and Rodney King in 1992," Bodine predicted to KGO 810AM's Charles "Karel" Bouley. "They're going to be talking about this case — George Zimmerman in 2013 — for years to come."
Among Bodine's other recent media appearances are:
- On AM 560 WIND (Chicago), KBRT-AM 740 (Southern California) and KCBC-AM 770 (San Francisco) to discuss the U.S. Supreme Court's Voting Rights Act decision
- On AM 850 KOA (Denver) and AM 810 KGO (San Francisco) to explain the Supreme Court's marriage equality decisions
- On Mike Carruthers' "Something You Should Know" (syndicated to 150 radio stations nationwide) to discuss drunk driving laws
