Social media can't happily cuddle up with you on a cold night or bark at the mailman like your canine companion, but you can think of it as your firm's new best friend.

What can you learn about online marketing from your dog? Believe it or not, a whole lot:

  •   Timing is everything.

Scooter knows your daily routine: work, dinner, then sleep. Approaching your social media audience at the right time of day with blog posts or tweets may mean more views from readers, as studies show the best times to reach your audience are in the afternoon (for a tweet) and early morning (for a blog post).

  • Be as social as possible.

Just as your dog has a place to run with friends and explore the local park, there is a piece of online space that everyone and anyone can claim. Whether its blogging, tweeting, or a unique website — your firm should have an online presence and use integrated media channels as much as possible. A blog is just one way to promote your firm and its areas of expertise to a broader audience. The more visibility your firm has online, the better the chances of being found, then chosen by consumers.

  • Lead the pack.

Some dogs are born to take charge and head up the pack. Do you have a professional accomplishment that should be touted, such as an AV Preeminent® rating? If so, are you leveraging it in your marketing? Use ratings to your advantage to attract potential clients. You've earned the distinction — now find out how to make the most of it!

  • Let your personality shine through.

All dogs have unique personalities that distinguish them from others. How can you set your firm apart from the rest? By highlighting strengths and accomplishments in all of your communication vehicles — and the messaging needs to be consistent. Do you have a professional Profile on Lawyers.comSM? You can showcase your practice areas, firm and lawyer biographies, plus link back to your existing website; it's a way to stand out.

  • Take a bite out of the competition.

Does your dog try to win at a game of tug-of-war? It's in his nature. In fact, we're all competitors at heart, especially when it comes to matters of business. But you have to be "in the game" to make an impact. The more you effectively engage in ways to promote your firm online and through social media, the better your chances are for obtaining new leads.

Using social media is definitely one way to achieve this harmonious interaction. If you don't want to do this yourself, that's what staff members and outside contracted firms are for. Use them and watch your reputation. . .and ultimately your bottom line, be rewarded handsomely!
