&lt;p&gt;Salacious details of intriguing legal cases are a draw to the masses in a society that can&amp;#39;t get enough of the specifics. There is no such thing as TMI, or &amp;quot;too much information&amp;quot; anymore. It&amp;#39;s not just the &amp;quot;need to know&amp;quot; &amp;mdash; it&amp;#39;s the need to know absolutely &lt;b&gt;everything&lt;/b&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Take the case of the moment: Jodi Arias, who is currently on trial for the alleged savage murder of her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander. The details of their relationship, all of which were discussed intimately in court, were highly sexual in nature. The public can&amp;#39;t get enough of the details.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The trial is considered search engine rankings gold. In the world of websites and page views, the more interesting, factual and informational, the more there is a demand from consumers. Television isn&amp;#39;t the main news source for people anymore &amp;mdash; it&amp;#39;s all about having an effective website and communicating in the right way, at the right time.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;What role does social media play from a legal perspective? A greater one than expected. But what is considered &amp;quot;crossing the line&amp;quot; and what are the consequences?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Take two recent examples where the &amp;quot;viral&amp;quot; nature of the topic contributed to the end result. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The first is the debacle with tech developer Adria Richards, who tweeted photos and derogatory comments made by male colleagues while all were at an industry conference. The consensus was that by publicly &amp;quot;shaming&amp;quot; these men, she had gone too far. Days after the tweets went viral, Richards was fired, as were the two colleagues that were mentioned. Several labor attorneys who were asked to comment on the case said it would be hard to defend on behalf of Richards.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;For the next example, take the Steubenville, Ohio rape case that has recently been in the headlines. The images that were taken on the night of the alleged rape of a sixteen-year-old girl by her&amp;nbsp;peers were posted on social media sites, and many of the accompanying tweets that suggested she was responsible for the actions. An online vigilante group had also unearthed images that had been deleted. These images and tweets lead to the conviction of the accused. Two teenage girls from Steubenville were also arrested for threatening the victim on social media, according to &lt;a target="_blank" href="http://www.cleveland.com/steubenville-rape-case/index.ssf/2013/03/two_steubenville_girls_arreste.html#incart_river" title="Steubenville social media case"&gt;Cleveland&amp;#39;s Plain Dealer&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;a target="_blank" href="http://www.lexisnexis.com/law-firm-marketing/social-media-marketing/?access=1-2689060840&amp;amp;treatcd=1-3219242921" title="Social media"&gt;Social media&lt;/a&gt; played a pivotal role in both of these cases and reinforces the fact that it is of actual news and informational value. According to a study by the American Bar Association, &lt;strong&gt;1 out of 2&lt;/strong&gt;&amp;nbsp;respondents from small firms (9 attorneys or fewer) reported retaining clients directly or via referral as a result of their legal topic blogging.* &lt;/p&gt;
