Fran Obeid is a partner at the law firm of Obeid & Lowenstein, LLP. She represents individuals and corporate entities in litigation, tax controversy and criminal defense matters. Prior to founding Obeid & Lowenstein with her partner and University of Michigan college classmate, D. Mara Lowenstein, Ms. Obeid was associated with the law firm of Kostelanetz & Fink, LLP where she defended the former KPMG Vice Chair of Tax Services in the largest criminal tax case to date, United States v. Stein (S.D.N.Y.) , resulting in dismissal of the indictment on constitutional grounds.
Ms. Obeid has successfully defended individuals and businesses accused of misdemeanors and felonies by the New York District Attorney and United States Attorney's Offices and has extensive experience with complex and small litigation matters. She regularly assists clients with the IRS' voluntary disclosure practice and Federal and State tax collection matters. Ms. Obeid has also represented the trustee in the Chapter 7 bankruptcy of a securities firm.
She is a graduate of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. Upon graduating from law school, Ms. Obeid clerked for the Honorable Henry B. Pitman in the Southern District of New York and was an attorney for the Office of the Corporation Counsel. Ms. Obeid is a member of the City Bar's Litigation Committee and the Federal Bar Council Inns of Court. She is the co-author of Foreign Bank Secrecy Laws: Making Amends With the IRS, New York Law Journal (Sept. 3, 2008) (posted on LexisNexis® Tax Law Center) and For Whom the Bell Tolls: How the IRS Picks Audit Targets, New York Law Journal (April 11, 2008).
