About Kids' Chance: Helping Children of Workers Seriously Injured or Killed on the Job

Kids’ Chance is a 501(c)(3) national organization that was formed for the purpose of creating, assisting and supporting state-level Kids’ Chance organizations throughout the United States, as well as other similar programs that provide educational opportunities and scholarships for the children of workers seriously injured or killed on the job.

Mission

Serious work-related accidents have a devastating effect on families, especially children. Already overwhelmed with difficult emotions, these children must often confront the hurdle of funding their own education.

The mission of Kids’ Chance’s is to fulfill the dreams of these children and help them reach their potential by providing them with educational scholarships. If not for our help, the majority of Kids’ Chance scholarship recipients would not have access to post-secondary education.

Year after year, we have watched Kids’ Chance scholarship students from all over the United States graduate from various institutions of higher education and elect to continue their education or begin rewarding careers.

Vision

Kids’ Chance believes that through our work, we can make a significant difference in the lives of all children affected by a workplace injury by helping them pursue and achieve their educational goals.

We believe:

  • Children are society’s most valuable resource.
  • We have an obligation to give children the tools they need to succeed in life.
  • Access to higher education ensures that children have the necessary skills to be successful in the workplace.
  • Investing in our children’s future provides them the opportunity to make a difference in their own and other people’s lives.

History

Robert Clyatt, a workers’ compensation attorney from Georgia, founded the first Kids’ Chance organization in 1988. Through his work, he witnessed the life-shattering impact that serious workplace injuries had on the children of fatally or catastrophically injured workers.

With the assistance of the Workers’ Compensation Section of the Georgia Bar, Kids’ Chance of Georgia was incorporated and began raising money to fund scholarships for the children of injured Georgia workers.

Today, more than 25 states have organized programs that are actively providing need-based scholarships to the families of fatally or seriously injured in workplace accidents, and new Kids’ Chance organizations are being formed each year.
