  1. About eBooks
    1. What is an eBook?
Also known as electronic books, eBooks are digital publications that can be read on a variety of devices. These devices include:

      • Personal computers, both PC and Mac® via e-reader software programs
      • Smartphones like Apple® iPhone® and BlackBerry® handheld devices
      • Tablets like the Apple® iPad® digital device
      • Personal digital assistants like the Apple® iPod touch® and the Palm® handheld devices
      • Dedicated eBook devices like the Amazon® KindleTM, Barnes & Noble nook™ and the SONY® Reader

A rapidly growing number of LexisNexis legal titles are available as LexisNexis eBooks.

    2. What do I need to get started with LexisNexis eBooks?
The LexisNexis eBook experience requires two elements: the LexisNexis eBook file itself and a software program or e-reader device that can display that file. LexisNexis offers its eBooks in the two most commonly used file formats: epub and mobi.

If you own a dedicated eBook device, all you have to do to start reading is download your LexisNexis eBook file to your computer desktop and then sync it to your e-reader device. If you want to read your LexisNexis eBook on a computer, smartphone or tablet, you may first have to download a copy of e-reader software before you can read your eBook file. Examples of e-reader software that you can use with LexisNexis eBooks are Apple iBooks®, Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble nook™ e-reader apps and Adobe® Digital Editions software, among others.

Reading functionality—your ability to search, highlight or take notes for instance, depends on the device and e-reader software, not the eBook. Refer to your device and software documentation for more details.
    3. What eBook file format should I choose?
This depends on the e-reader software you are using.

Choose epub files if you plan to read your LexisNexis eBook on:
      • Apple® products such as the iPad® or iPhone®
      • SONY® Reader
      • Barnes & Noble nook™
      • Adobe® Digital Editions
Choose mobi files if you plan to read your eBook on:
      • Amazon® Kindle™
      • Palm®
      • BlackBerry®

    2. Do I have to pay shipping, handling or taxes on LexisNexis eBooks?
When you purchase a LexisNexis eBook, there are no shipping and handling charges. Sales tax will be based on your credit card billing address.
    3. Can I return an eBook purchase?
Unfortunately, LexisNexis eBooks are not returnable.
  3. Downloading Your LexisNexis eBook
    1. How do I download my eBook from LexisNexis?
Regardless of what device you will use to read your eBook, we recommend you download it first to your computer and then upload it to your device.
      1. You will receive an email from LexisNexis with a user ID and password to activate your Account Profile on the Store and Download Center. If you have previously registered on the Store under your current email address, your existing user ID and password are your Account Profile credentials.
      2. Click on the link in the email to go to the Store. Enter your user ID and password and activate your Account Profile by a simple security question. Upon activating, you will be taken to the My Account Options and the View My Downloads tab on your Account Profile.
      3. Java Plug-in is required for the Download Center. Click the link at the top of the page if you need to download it. You will see the Java logo activated in the middle of the screen for a few seconds. Your downloadable files will then appear.
      4. The eBook files will be listed for each title you ordered; click the box to download. You may download one at a time or several at a time. If you wish to download one file or several files all at once, click the Parallel radial button. If you wish to download several files one after the other, click the Sequential radial button.
      5. Click the eBook file checkbox and then set the download location. The download location function helps you navigate to a directory folder (designate for digital media) on your desktop to save the eBook file.
      6. Click Download Now. You will see a progress meter as the file downloads to completion.
      7. If reading the LexisNexis eBook on a device such as an Apple® iPad®, Amazon® Kindle or Barnes & Noble nook, you will need to sync your device to your desktop to access the eBook files. If reading on the desktop, launch your e-reader and navigate to the eBook files to add them to your virtual bookshelf.
    2. Are there any technical requirements for downloading my eBook to my computer?
Downloading your eBook to a computer uses a Download Management application, and requires Java version 1.5 or greater to be installed on your client machine. You can easily install or upgrade your version of Java by visiting http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp. Then simply follow the instructions to determine which operating system your computer uses and then follow the download instructions for that operating system. LexisNexis recommends that if you have any questions about how to ensure your computer meets the minimum technical requirements that you first contact your organization's IT department.
    3. How many times can I download my LexisNexis eBook?
Once you’ve downloaded your LexisNexis eBook, you can gain access to it as many times as you’d like on your e-reader. Your license to download an eBook from the LexisNexis Download Center, however, covers a fixed number of downloads per title and quantity purchased.
    4. Can I share my LexisNexis eBook?
LexisNexis eBooks are only licensed for use to one individual and cannot be shared. The Terms of Use for a LexisNexis eBook can be found at the front of your eBook.
    5. What does DRM mean, and how will it affect my LexisNexis eBook ownership?
You may see Digital Rights Management (DRM) in your LexisNexis eBook Terms of Use. DRM places the purchaser’s account name and email address in the eBook file. This system ensures that a specific copy of a LexisNexis eBook is licensed to one individual and that individual alone uses it. In this way, copyright laws are respected and authors and publishers are compensated fairly. Refer to the Terms of Use when purchasing a LexisNexis eBook for more information.
    6. If I purchase a LexisNexis eBook subscription with updates, how do I receive these subscription updates?
When an update becomes available for your subscription, you will receive an email alert from LexisNexis notifying you that your publication has been updated. You may then download the updated publication from the LexisNexis Download Center and sync to your preferred device.
