Search Tips
All searches used with Continuous Alerts will follow the existing Factiva rules. Valid search connectors include the following, where N indicates a number value:
- And — Use "and" to connect two words or phrases that must appear in the same document.
land trust and Ohio
This search retrieves documents that mention both land trust and Ohio.
- Or — Use "or" to find documents that contain one or more terms or phrases linked by "or".
lawyer or counsel or attorney
This search retrieves documents that mention lawyer, counsel, or attorney.
- Not — Use "not" to filter the specified word or phrase from your search results.
wireless not cellular
This search retrieves documents that mention wireless but not cellular.
- Same — Use "same" to find documents in which your search terms appear in the same paragraph.
wireless same cellular
This search retrieves documents that mention wireless and cellular in the same paragraph.
wireless same (cellular and mobile)
This search retrieves documents that mention wireless in the same paragraph as cellular and mobile.
Notes:
- "Same" cannot be used repetitively, for instance:
wireless same cellular same mobile
- "Same" cannot be used in field qualified searches, for instance:
lp=(wireless same cellular)
A field qualified search is one that uses an abbreviation, such as "lp=", followed by a parenthetical statement. The abbreviation identifies a specific field Factiva uses in searching. In this example, "lp=" indicates that you want to find articles that have both cellular and wireless in the lead paragraph.
- w/N — Use "w/N" to find documents in which your search terms appear within N words of each other, in the entered order.
william w/3 hearst
This search retrieves documents that mention william (first), then within the next 3 words, the name hearst.
Notes:
- N must be a number from 1 to 10.
- N is required.
- w/N will only work within the limits of a paragraph.
- adjN — Use "adjN" to connect two words or phrases that must appear in the same document within N words, in the entered order.
grand final adj5 australian rules
This search retrieves documents that mention grand final (first), then within the next 5 words, the phrase australian rules.
Notes:
- The N is optional; if omitted, the number 1 is assumed.
- adjN will only work within the limits of a paragraph.
- nearN — Use "nearN" to find documents in which your search terms appear within N words of each other, in any order.
grand final near3 australian rules
This search retrieves documents that mention grand final within the 3 words of the phrase australian rules, no matter which phrase appears first.
Notes:
- The N is optional; if omitted, the number 1 is assumed.
- "nearN" will only work within the limits of a paragraph.
- /N/ — Use "/N/" to connect two words or phrases that must appear in the same document within N words of each other, in any order.
ball park /25/ cincinnati
This search retrieves documents that mention ball park within 25 words of cincinnati, no matter which phrase appears first.
Notes:
- N is required.
- "/N/" will only work within the limits of a paragraph.
- * — Use the "*" character as a wildcard at the end of your term to truncate it. Truncation allows you to search for alternate endings to a word.
generat*
This search retrieves documents that mention generate, generating, generation, and so forth.
Note: * must be the last character in your search term.
- $N — Use at least 3 characters followed by the "$N" (dollar sign followed by a number from 1-9) to indicate that you want to find this word plus up to N more characters.
Example: generat$2
This search retrieves documents that mention generate, generates, and generated, but does not retrieve generating or generation.
Non-Example: ch$2
This search is invalid because the term does not contain the minimum 3 characters before the dollar sign.
Note: The N is optional; if omitted, the number 5 is assumed.
- ? — Use the "?" (question mark) as a single wildcard character; for instance, in words that may have alternate spellings.
standardi?e
This search retrieves documents that mention both standardize and standardise, allowing you to find both the British English and American English versions of the word.
Note: A minimum of three characters must be entered before the question mark.
- wc> — Use the "wc>" (word count greater than) operator to limit a search by word count. You may substitute the less than sign (<) for the greater than sign (>).
Microsoft and wc>500
This search retrieves documents that contain the term Microsoft in articles with a word count greater than 500.
immigration and wc<100
This search retrieves documents that contain the term immigration in articles with a word count less than 100.
