Delivering Your Documents (Print, Email)
You may look at your search results in several different view formats, available by clicking the relevant tab at the top of the Results page: Result List, Expanded List, KWIC, or Full Document. Each view format displays a different level of detail.
Displays basic information in a numbered list, about the documents your search found. The information typically includes the following, although it will vary depending on the sources you searched:
No. — The documents are automatically numbered to help you identify specific documents for delivery or viewing.
Results — click one of the results to view the full text of the document. Click on the checkbox next to a result to tag the document for viewing or delivery.
Displays the same information as in Result List for each document, along with your search terms in the context they appear within the document. Click in the checkbox next to a result to tag the document for viewing or delivery.
Displays documents in the KWIC ("Key Words In Context") format, showing each of your search terms surrounded by a window of text. The KWIC format is useful for determining if a document is applicable to your research topic. The default number of words displayed with each search term found is 25 before/25 after.
Displays the full text of the documents your search found.
The terms for your search are displayed in a "trail" in the upper left of the Results page. If you perform a FOCUS™ search, which narrows the results of your initial search, the terms of your initial search will be followed by a comma and then the terms of the FOCUS search. Also, the initial terms will be displayed as a hyperlink. Click the hyperlink to return to your original results.
For example, you might perform an initial search on law schools, the a FOCUS search on solomon amendment. The trail would appear as follows:
law schools, solomon amendment
When reviewing your search results, you may determine that different search terms would better meet your needs than the current terms. To change the terms, you may either edit your current search.
To edit a search, click the Edit Search link, located above the Results form tabs. This displays the search form you used to enter the current search. The current search appears on the form, where you may add, delete or change terms as necessary and run the search again.
To make results easier to review, you may want to change the order in which your results are displayed according to the type of information you are looking for.
To change the order, select a sort format from the Sort drop-down list on the Results form. Sort options vary according to the type of documents in your results, but most include Date and Relevance.
Results from a Basic Search can be sorted by document type. When sorted in this manner, the results in the Result List and Expanded List views will be preceded by a list of the various document types and the number of each type found. For example, a search on montana results in a list comprising Document (1), Hearing (88). Legislative History (9), Print (1), and Report (8). Each of the items in this list is also a hyperlink to that portion of the results. Click an item to jump to the first instance of the associated document type.
Note: If the number of results is so great that it can't be presented on a single page, the system will suppress this feature.
The Results page offers several ways for you to move quickly through the documents in your search results. Navigation buttons on the page let you move through documents in a results list or though search terms in an individual document.
In the Result List and Expanded List views, use the following navigation buttons to move quickly through your results. The buttons do not appear if your search retrieves only one document or one page of results.
Click to view the first page of your results.
Click to view the previous page of your results.
Click to view the next page of your results.
Click to view the last page of your results.
Use the "Go to Page" drop-down list, located at the top right and bottom right of the Results list, to jump to a specific page within the results set. The numbers in the drop-down are the items that appear on that page.
When the results set is sorted on document type (and the number of results is not so great results it can't be presented on a single page), the system will display a summary of the documents types found. This list is interactive and allows you to jump to the first instance of a document type by clicking the associated item in the list. To navigate to the next document type, click the Next link that appears at the top of the current group.
In the KWIC and Full Text views, use the following navigation buttons to move from one document to the next.
Click to view the previous document.
Click to view the next document.
You may select or "tag" selected documents in your results for emailing or printing. For example, if you tag documents 1, 6 and 10 in your results, you may print or email just those tagged documents later.
To tag a document, click the checkbox next to the document name.
To tag all documents on a particular page of a results list, click the checkbox on the far left of the red bar above the results.
To print or email tagged documents, click the appropriate delivery icon ( for print; for email). For details on how to proceed from this point, click on the Tips link () located on the resulting form.
