Searching Within Your Results

While viewing the results from your initial search, do the following:

  1. In the "Search within results" text box, enter a search using terms and connectors that represents a specific topic within the current results.

Note: If you are viewing a specific results group, the search will run on the full results list, not just the group you are currently viewing.

  2. Click the Go button to run the search.

  3. Review the new results. If you need to narrow them further, repeat the previous steps. You can continue to narrow the results as many times as necessary.

Note: The Source and Terms Trail at the top of the Results page includes your searches that are run within the results. You can click any search in the trail to return to the results of that search. To return to your original search results, click the Results tab at the top of the page.

Searching Within Results While Using Result Groups

While the Result Groups form filters your results to a specific category or grouping, a search within results will always be run across your entire search results. When you search within results while using Result Groups, the narrowed list appears in the main content area to the right, and only those groups and subgroups that contain the "Search within results" terms will appear in the Result Groups form to the left.

Note: The Result Groups form is available in List and List with Hits view.

Changing Your Search within Results

If you narrowed your search too much, you want to change your research strategy, or you misspelled a word, you may run another search within your original results. To do that:

  1. Click the Results tab at the top of the Results form.

  2. The page refreshes with the results from your original search.

  3. Enter your new search in the "Search within results" box on the results form and click the Go button.

Filtering by Date

You can click the Filter by Date link to display the Search within results box. In this box, you can narrow your search by entering additional search terms (see the subtopics above) and/or you can narrow it to a specific date or date range that falls within the range of previously specified dates.

Returning to Your Original Search Results

To return to your original search results display from any narrowed search, click the Results tab at the top of the Results form. If you were using the Result Groups form in the List or List with Hits view prior to searching within your results, clicking the Results tab also takes you back to your original search results.
