THRIFTY SEARCHER . . . Print Cites Within a Document Quickly with the LEXLinkT Feature
Dear Thrifty Searcher...
Thanks for info on the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in the January issue. But my organization must track what happens now...as the law is codified. When will final rules be issued? What code will be affected and how? To follow the letter of the law, we have to know where all of the letters are! So sign me...
Keeping a Very Close Eye on Codes
Dear Eagle Eyes:
The Federal Register, online every business day within 24 hours of publication, lets you monitor the rule-making process efficiently. You'll also find searching options unavailable through public Web sites.
To find announcements of actions that discuss the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (P.L. 107-204, 116 Stat. 745, 15 USCS 7201), a thorough search would be:
SOURCE PATH: Legal tab > Federal Legal - U.S. > Federal Register
SEARCH: sarbanes oxley OR 107-204 OR (116 PRE/5 745) OR (15 PRE/5 7201)
The parentheses included will ensure that 116 PRE/5 745 and 15 PRE/5 7201 are treated as separate search words.
Once you've reviewed your research results, click on the Save as ECLIPSET link and have the search repeated on a business daily, weekly or monthly basis automatically. The search results will be e-mailed.
If you have more specific research needs, for example, you want only final rules, or rules issued by a particular agency, tailor this search accordingly. For example, to find final rules released by the Securities & Exchange Commission:
SOURCE PATH: Legal tab > Federal Legal - U.S. > Federal Register
SEARCH: sarbanes oxley OR 107-204 OR (116 PRE/5 745) OR (15 PRE/5 7201)
AND ACTION(final) AND AGENCY(securities)
If you're tracking changes to a certain Code of Federal Regulations section, for example, 17 CFR 228.401, find that as well with the Federal Register. Use the RULE-TEXT segment.
SOURCE PATH: Legal tab > Federal Legal - U.S. > Federal Register
SEARCH: rule-text(228.401)
Find amendment/proposed amendment details and the USCS sections cited as authority. (Live links to USCS sections are included.)
So what about the new USCS sections written as a result of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act? What about those amended or to be amended? You can find these sections with the USCS-Statutes at Large Table. Here's how:
SOURCE PATH: Legal tab > Federal Legal - U.S. > United States Code Service (USCS) Materials > USCS - Statutes at Large Table
CLICK: NEW SEARCH
SEARCH: 107-204
The document found is extensive, but with LexisNexis pagination options, you can find what you need quickly. Select the Public Law pagination from the PAGE box at the bottom of your screen. Then ENTER: 204 in the box next to pagination and click GO.
Move directly to the table for U.S. Public Law 107-204 -- and discover a section-by-section table. It lists the Public Law section, the USCS section it affects -- and the code section's status as a result (e.g. amended or new).
