HEADLINE . . . MarkMonitor® Via LexisNexis: Guard Valuable Intellectual Capital
Monitor the vast Internet universe and pinpoint where and how your organization's trademark names, domain names and symbols are being used. MarkMonitor Internet Protection tools methodically investigate Web sites, drilling down through the pages within the sites -- even to the pages' metadata and programming codes to identify and record brand uses -- and misuses. And you can count on real-time search results when you need them. Or choose regular reports that can help you corroborate patterns of misuse. MarkMonitor's two basic Internet Protection tool types include:
- QuickToolsâ"˘ for investigation. Select products that focus on spotting misuse in domain names, Web sites and even message boards.
- SmartReports, which let you combine QuickTools information you need into regularly generated reports.
Gain access to MarkMonitor Internet Protection tools via a gateway from the:
- LexisNexis® Corporate Counsel Center;
- Trademark & Copyright Practice Area page through www.lexis.com;
- Trademark area of law (Select Trademark from the main Legal www.lexis.com menu). Then choose Internet & Domain Name Services; or
- Guided Search Forms tab at the main www.lexis.com menu.
More Coming From MarkMonitor
Watch for MarkMonitor's Domain Solution Center, a secure, Web-based interface where an organization can orchestrate its domain portfolio.
Register and renew domain names, sort domains or edit them...one at a time, in subsets or all at once. Since MarkMonitor is an ICANN accredited registrar, individuals and cybersquatters cannot get access to the robust Domain Solution Center toolbox, which are designed specifically for corporations, financial institutions and law firms.
SPOTLIGHT ON . . . MarkMonitor Internet Protection Tools: Find Out Who's Using Your Brand on the Internet -- and How
Here is an overview of the MarkMonitor tools designed specifically for protecting intellectual capital. Through its real-time QuickTools and comprehensive SmartReports, MarkMonitor can assist your organization with:
- Brand commentary to track and monitor consumer perspectives. Quickly identify and respond to rumors, complaints or reviews, ensuring customer satisfaction.
- Brand protection to protect against counterfeit merchandise distribution, lost revenue from Internet traffic diversion, and brand dilution from confusingly similar domain names, copycat sites, disparaging sites or unauthorized linking relationships.
- Channel monitoring to manage and monitor brand usage by partners, resellers, franchisees and distributors to ensure accurate pricing, creative, links, etc.
- Competitive intelligence to drive product development and to meet customer needs by understanding the competition. Uncover opinions, rumors and reviews.
MARKMONITOR QUICKTOOLS
Whether you need to monitor domain names, Web sites or even message boards, real-time QuickTools can help you.
Domain Name QuickTools
TMIQâ"˘ -- Identify and reconcile registered trademarks with domain names. See the trademarks owned by a particular entity next to the equivalent domain name. TMIQ checks against the .com, .net, .org and .info registries and more than 90 ccTLDs.
ReverseWhois -- Discover domains owned by a particular registrant and spot cybersquatting patterns. ReverseWhois searches gTLDs and ccTLDs and provides a comprehensive report.
EDomainmonitorâ"˘-Uncover use or abuse of a brand or famous name anywhere in registered domain names. EDomainmonitor shows all Web sites that include your search terms...anywhere in the domain name.
Web Site QuickTools
ENetmonitorâ"˘ -- Scour the Web for brand and trademark misuse virtually anywhere in a Web site...in meta tags, text, and hidden text like programming code. Identify the offenders. Even determine the worst offenders.
ESitemonitorâ"˘ -- Investigate every page of a Web site to reveal how brands are being referenced. ESitemonitor even checks programming code.
ELinkmonitorâ"˘ -- Identify Internet sites linking to your Web pages, including those with pornographic or disparaging content.
EBannermonitorâ"˘ -- Protect your brand from competitive banner ads. EBannermonitor reviews banner ads triggered when your brand or famous name is used as the search term.
Message Board QuickTools
EBoardmonitorâ"˘ -- Monitor your brand in online discussion groups and listservs. Learn what people are saying-in real time.
MARKMONITOR SMARTREPORTS
SmartReports are generated by integrating QuickTool search results on a particular brand. (Perfect when you're assembling proof-of-use patterns.) Choose from:
DomainSmartâ"˘ -- Focus on how your brand is used in domain names, reviewing general (.com, .net and .org)
and international (.uk, .cs, .ti, etc.) domains. View the owners of all reported domains.
NetSmartâ"˘ -- Get a complete look at your brand on the Internet-visible and hidden parts of Web sites, patterns in banner ads, who is linking to your site and how it affects your brand.
Ask your LexisNexis account executive for more information on MarkMonitor Internet Protection Tools.

THRIFTY SEARCHER . . . New Criminal History Records for 36 States
Dear Thrifty Searcher...
We use the inmate information LexisNexis (services) provides in background checks. But we'd also like to tap into information on offenders, past and present, serving time in state facilities. Court filings don't provide that, so
what do you suggest? I am...
The Credentials Checker in Columbus, Ohio
Dear Checker:
If you're involved in employment checks, check out LexisNexis® Peoplewise® solutions that can cover everything from employment application verification to criminal records checks. Talk to your LexisNexis account executive or go to http://www.lexisnexis.com/peoplewise for more details on the PeopleWise line.
If you don't need the depth that PeopleWise products provide, e.g., you're a fact checker for a newspaper or you're trying to locate a witness, try the new Criminal History Records source, now available through the LexisNexis public records collection. It offers a collection of statewide criminal-background information collected from a variety of state criminal repositories, courts, state departments of corrections and other agencies.
LexisNexis criminal-history records from nearly 70% of the U.S. criminal population are represented. Thirty-six states are included, and Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, and Virginia offer records from several agencies. (See below for a complete list of participating states.)
For more details on what each state covers, check the source description for Criminal History Records. (Click on the blue "i" icon next to the menu source listing.) While the record content does vary from state to state, records often provide basics such as offender:
- name, aliases, birth date, address on file, state agency ID number;
- gender, race, hair/eye color, height, weight;
- offense date, description and severity;
- court disposition, case number and county where convicted;
- sentence date, length, and minimum/maximum sentence;
- incarceration status (incarcerated, on probation, on parole, released, etc.)
Search by offender name, date of birth, etc. For example, to find records for Joe Dough of Fiction, Ohio*:
ENTER: joe OR joseph /3 doe AND ADDRESS (fiction /1 oh)
*Fictional name and address, used for illustration purposes only.
