KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE . . . LexisNexis®
Publisher: The Knowledge Management and Time Saving Tool
By
Alfreda Russell
Senior Librarian Relations Consultant
LexisNexis Librarian Relations Group
Years ago, when I was working at
one of the largest law firms in Boston, one of my many research
duties was to track relevant issues for attorneys and the Marketing
department.
I used the ECLIPSE feature
(Electronic Clipping Service) from LexisNexis to provide me with the
most timely and relevant articles. Of course, back then, there was
no e-mail component. Retrieved articles were printed; I reviewed the
printouts for relevance before forwarding them. If I didn’t remember
to check the printer the first thing that day, time was lost.
As powerful as the ECLIPSE feature
is, as I look back now, I wish I had had LexisNexis Publisher. My
task would have been easier, especially since that law firm has
expanded globally and needs to have information available around the
clock.
LexisNexis Publisher offers all the
tools you need to locate reliable, relevant information through
the LexisNexis services and to provide access to that content via
your intranet or your organization’s Web site.
From scrolling headlines on your
Web site to delivering newsletters to employees all over the world,
LexisNexis Publisher helps you give your site visitors and employees
the information they need—without leaving your site.
You control the information because
you create the searches. And LexisNexis Publisher uses the filtering
precision of LexisNexis SmartIndexing Technology,
so you receive highly relevant search results.
You review the documents retrieved
online. Then publish links to the most relevant—right on your site.
It’s that easy!
LexisNexis Publisher is a Web-based
tool that allows you, the editor (often the Information
Professional), to screen for the most relevant articles that you can
push to an external or internal Web site using a LexisNexis feed of
approximately 20,000 news and business sources, which now includes
Factiva® resources.
Instead of spending valuable staff
time clipping articles of interest, you can search and review
electronically, streamlining your tasks under one management tool so
articles can be shared across departments and locations.
LexisNexis Publisher also allows
you to archive up to 90 days of published news for searching. This
type of institutional news archive, even though short-term, can save
you time, especially if the editor filters and publishes articles
under predetermined topics.
And LexisNexis houses the articles,
so there is no IT time investment on the side of the organization.
More importantly, LexisNexis
Publisher is a copyright-compliant tool. By utilizing this
publishing system and the news publications contained within it, an
organization can view the full text of stories without seeking
republication rights from the individual publishers.
You can also append comments and
direct users to related internal or external documents, adding
further value. In essence, you manage your users’ experiences by
presenting content in a style that melds seamlessly with your
site.
There are many more flexible
options with LexisNexis Publisher. For example, you set update times
to meet your needs. Choose from a variety of document display order
and format options. (You can even make topics accessible through the
BlackBerry® Wireless Handheld.) And you can track which content
topics are viewed most often.
Ask your LexisNexis Librarian
Relations Consultant or your LexisNexis account executive for more
details on how LexisNexis Publisher can meet your specific
information needs.
Or ask your colleagues how they are
using LexisNexis Publisher. Lori Tarpinian, Director of Library
Services at the firm of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C.,
notes LexisNexis Publisher is “... very easy to administer. It
takes just a few minutes to set up a search. The presentation of the
material is pleasing and professional looking. It’s easy for all to
see what is being tracked by others in the firm...”

THRIFTY SEARCHER . . . DISPOSITION Segment Now
a Group Segment
Dear Thrifty Searcher:
When searching case law via (the) LexisNexis (services), I notice
that many full-text cases show a Disposition line (segment) as well
as an Outcome paragraph (in the case summary). Each says similar
things, though they don’t match exactly. So when I search for cases
that were affirmed or reversed, should I use both Disposition and
Outcome in my request to ensure that my results are complete?
I.P. From Kansas City
Dear Kansas City: The simple answer is
… use the DISPOSITION segment when focusing your research to a
specific case disposition or outcome.
Now let us explain: There are two
places where disposition information about the case is shown—the
DISPOSITION segment and the OUTCOME segment of the LexisNexis® Case
Summary.
Some cases offer both segments. In
these cases, the court provides a specific disposition phrase. (By
the way, LexisNexis reproduces these phrases exactly as the court
provides them.) And LexisNexis editors also include detailed
disposition language in the OUTCOME segment of the LexisNexis Case
Summary.
However, not every court provides
the disposition phrase; some cases have only the OUTCOME segment
provided by LexisNexis editors.
That doesn’t change our answer. You
still only need one segment name when searching. Here’s why. Now
when you research with the DISPOSITION segment, the LexisNexis
services searches both—the documents’ OUTCOME segments as well
as the DISPOSITION segments. Think of the DISPOSITION segment as a
group segment.
The opposite is not true.
When you search with the OUTCOME segment,
you do not search the DISPOSITION segment as well. You search
only the OUTCOME segments.
Here’s how DISPOSITION segment
searching works. Let’s say you’re researching U.S. and state Labor &
Employment cases regarding ADA reasonable accommodation procedures
employers must provide workers with alcoholism. Your search:
SOURCE: Labor & Employment Cases, Federal and State
SEARCH: reasonab! /7 accommodat! /25 alcohol!
After reviewing your results, you want to narrow your research to
cases that were reversed. To check both DISPOSITION and
OUTCOME segments, go to the FOCUS feature box at the top of the
screen, and after your search:
ENTER: AND DISPOSITION(revers!)
Click GO. To return to your original search results, i.e., before
you entered the FOCUS feature, click the Exit
FOCUS link.
