SPOTLIGHT ON . . .
Now on Your Screen … the
LexisNexis® Alerts Tab: One Home for All New LexisNexis Alert
Features
Now you have access to all
www.lexis.com automatic updating features—in one location.
Select the new ALERTS tab for regular, automatic research updates
that you can view online or receive via e-mail.
Select the ALERTS tab, available on
the main www.lexis.com menu next to the Shepard’s®
tab, and you have the option to choose:
- LexisNexis Alerts
(formerly ECLIPSE™ updates)—Follow any research issue … legal,
news, legislative/political and more ... on a monthly, weekly,
business daily or daily basis, even up to three times per day.
(More details below.)
- Shepard’s
Alert™—Get regular updates showing
additional citing references that could potentially impact the
validity of cases your patrons are monitoring. (More details on
page 05:123)
- CourtLink® Alerts—Get
regular updates on court filing activity. Move directly to all
the familiar LexisNexis® CourtLink® Alerts screens and
features—without signing off the LexisNexis services.
LexisNexis Alert (formerly
ECLIPSE updates): Here’s What’s New
The ECLIPSE feature is now the LexisNexis Alert feature. Just like
before, you can track the latest news on clients and their
businesses, trends in practice areas, pending legislation or
regulation and much more. (In fact, your existing ECLIPSE searches
have become LexisNexis Alert searches automatically.)
But now you have more
power and more flexibility in scheduling and running searches.
For example, with LexisNexis Alert, you can:
- Schedule a LexisNexis Alert
update up to three times a day. Get more timely updates
to breaking stories. Or select the update time frame that best
meets your research needs:
* 1 – 3 times per day (8 a.m., noon and 4 p.m. ET);
* 1 – 3 times per business day (M – F);
* once a week (on the week day and at the time you choose); or
* once or twice a month (on the days you select).
- Remove duplicate
documents during set up! If you select
this set-up option, the LexisNexis services will compare each
document retrieved. If more than 90 percent of the text is the
same, the document will be considered a duplicate and will not
be delivered to you.
More on New LexisNexis Alert
Features
- Schedule a LexisNexis
Alert search from a “zero results” search.
You can request a LexisNexis Alert search, even if your initial
search doesn’t find documents. Be alerted if events occur in the
future. For example, you can set a daily LexisNexis Alert search
for your practitioners managing a merger. The daily e-mail from
LexisNexis Alert will ensure that word of the merger hasn’t
leaked out during the “silent period.”
- Update now.
From your Alert manager screen, you can update any LexisNexis
Alert search immediately, outside the scheduled update. (See
Managing Your LexisNexis Alert Searches below for more details.)
- Get “no new results”
notification. This notification lets
you know the LexisNexis Alert search was run but there were no
new results.
Here’s How to Set Up a
LexisNexis Alert Update:
1.
Enter your search, and review your search results. Then click the
Save as Alert link at the top of your results screen. You can
click this link even if your search found 0 documents. You can also
save a search while using the FOCUS® feature. Or select a search
from your History log for Alert update.
2.
After you click the Save as Alert link, fill
in the Save Alert form:
A. Name your saved search.
B. Select your update frequency:
• monthly (and choose
the date and time of day)
• weekly (and choose the
weekday and time of day)
• every business day
(once, twice or three times per day)
• every day (once, twice
or three times per day)
C. Choose your delivery option—online,
printer or e-mail. If you select e-mail, provide an e-mail
address for the delivery. Click E-mail Options to personalize your
e-mail update subject line and choose attachment type and
formatting.
D. If you want to be notified via e-mail when your
search does not retrieve new documents, click the check box.
(Applicable only when the e-mail delivery option is selected.)
E. To exclude duplicate documents, click this
check box.
F. To be notified via e-mail each time your search
retrieves new documents, click this check box and add your
e-mail address.
3.
After you’ve made your Save Alert form selections,
click SAVE. You’ll be asked to confirm your choices. Then
with each search update you receive only new items.

Managing LexisNexis Alert Searches

Shepard’s Alert sub-tab. You can review current and previous
results. You can also update, edit or pause your Shepard’s
Alert search.

SEARCH STRATEGIES . . .
1) Easy Search™: New Research
Option Offers an Internet “Feel”;
2) Cast A Spell on Every Search
… Spell Check, That Is
1) Easy Search: New Research
Option Offers an Internet "Feel"
Now when you select sources and
move to the www.lexis.com search form, you have another
searching option. In addition to Terms and Connectors and Natural
Language, you can choose LexisNexis® Easy Search.
Easy Search, like the name implies,
is for novice users. But it’s also a good tool for patrons
comfortable with “quick and dirty” Internet research.
Click the Easy Search button
at the top of the lexis.com search form. Then you can add:
- Search words
Easy Search works best with only two or three search
words.
- Quotation marks
(optional)
If you wish to add quote marks, Easy Search
recognizes “phrase searching.”
- Connectors (optional)
Easy Search automatically recognizes your search as Boolean
or Natural Language.
Click Search. Your results
are ranked by relevance.
Because Easy Search is for fast,
simple searching, you cannot use segments or date restrictions once
you select the Easy Search button. Spell checking is not available,
and your results will not include a Save As Alert link.
But you can use the FOCUS
feature to add additional search terms to your original Easy
Search.
2) Cast A Spell on Every Search
… Spell Check, That Is
There’s a new link on the
lexis.com search form, right beneath the Search button. Before
you click Search, check your search— Terms and Connectors or
Natural Language—by clicking the Check Spelling link.
LexisNexis pre-search Spell Check
identifies misspelled words and provides spelling suggestions. Just
click on an option to replace a search word.
Save valuable research time and
improve accuracy. Not only can you replace misspelled words, but
you’ll also often find alternate search words.

Time and Help Generate Revenue for Your Firm With LexisNexis® Cost
Recovery Manager
By
Carol Barra
LexisNexis Librarian Relations Consultant
When I worked as a librarian at a
law firm, one way I helped the firm increase recovery for usage of
online services was to closely monitor use and proper allocation of
valid client/matter numbers for the LexisNexis services and
Westlaw®.
I wish LexisNexis Cost Recovery
Manager had been available then! It would have made this job much
easier and much less time consuming.
Let’s face it. Recovering the cost
of online research is a high priority for most firms. LexisNexis
Cost Recovery Manager gives your firm the ability to validate
client/matter numbers before granting users access to available
online services. You choose the databases to monitor, not just
the LexisNexis services, but other online services as well,
including Westlaw, BNA®, CCH®, LIVEDGAR®, RIA®, even Google®, just
to name a few.
Some firms are exploring the idea
of charging back for the research done on some of the other
flat-rate services subscribed to by the firm, such as BNA and CCH.
LexisNexis Cost Recovery Manager allows the administrator to decide
if client/matter numbers will be required or whether the firm just
wants to track time online in a particular database.
LexisNexis Cost Recovery Manager
works with your firm’s time and billing systems. (My firm used Elite
for our database of clients/matters and to generate the bills sent
to the firm’s clients.) Your client/matter database is updated
regularly, usually daily, so it is always up-to-date with the latest
valid client/matter numbers. And it’s simple for users to find and
select only valid client/matter numbers. No chance for transposing
numbers or making them up to match the masking you have set up.
That means more research being
charged to the appropriate client/matter and less time for you or
someone else on staff following up with the users to provide
accurate billing information.
(And remember … you will now be
able to provide usage reports. You’ll know how much the products are
being used and what value your firm is getting for them.)
But there’s more. LexisNexis Cost
Recovery Manager also offers other flexible report options. Reports
are available by:
- services accessed (services
you have chosen),
- users who accessed the
service,
- duration of the research,
- client/matter,
- timekeeper, and
- date of research.
Plus, the administrator also has
the ability to customize some reports.
Cost Recovery Manager along with
LexisNexis® PowerInvoice™ will assist you in helping your firm
recover the maximum amount possible for all of your online services.
Contact your LexisNexis Librarian
Relations Consultant or your LexisNexis account executive for
additional information and literature on LexisNexis Cost Recovery
Manager.
ONLINE WITH ... First Treatise
on Homeland Security Issues Now Available
Since September 11, 2001, Congress
has passed dozens of laws that have completely transformed federal
legislation governing matters as diverse as finance, labor,
intellectual property, ports and transportation, energy and
environment, food and drugs and many others. Countless regulatory
changes have been made and are being promulgated by a host of
federal agencies. New regulatory compliance and potential liability
issues confront state and local governments and the private sector.
Now there’s a way to put it all into perspective.
The new Homeland Security
Deskbook from LexisNexis® Matthew Bender® is currently the
ONLY analytical book on homeland security.
This reference compiles the
expertise of more than 20 attorneys at Venable LLP. (General Editor
is Professor James T. O’Reilly, University of Cincinnati, and
vice-chair of the ABA Homeland Security Committee.) The Homeland
Security Deskbook will answer three questions for the reader:
- What does the law now require
of my client or offer as opportunities for my client?
- What is the policy or
historical or legislative background that led to this
requirement?
- Where is this likely to
evolve?
This comprehensive guide discusses
and analyzes real problems that arise in
the post-9/11 world and provides the historical context and
structure of federal homeland security work and reference
materials—federal and state.
Among the issues discussed are:
- Protecting critical
infrastructure, including computer systems;
- Ensuring communications work
in an emergency and that local governments know what to do;
- Securing government contracts
and grants without exposing the recipient to catastrophic
liability or the loss of intellectual property rights;
- Coping with new regulations
about advance notice of imports and new procedures for bringing
in non-citizen workers or students;
- Handling environmental risk
management;
- Responding to government
requests for information;
- Gaining government approval
for new anti-terrorism technology and drugs.
Learn how to operate in the new
world of the U.S. PATRIOT Act, Maritime Transportation and
Security Act, Bioterrorism Act, Homeland Security Act,
Terrorism Risk Insurance Act, Enhanced Border Security and
Visa Entry Reform Act, and countless Executive Orders,
Presidential Decision Directives, Homeland Security Presidential
Directives, National Strategies, and guidance documents.
Also turn to this guide for
explanations of the new import reporting requirements, Project
BioShield, required registration of food facilities, background
checks for transporters and laboratories, I-9 verification,
Information Sharing and Analysis Centers, “interoperability,” the
SAFETY Act, US-VISIT, Security Sensitive Information, Protected
Critical Infrastructure Information and much more.
