TAKE A TOUR . . .
More Public Records Data,
Increased Searching Accuracy Via LexisNexis® SmartLinx™ Reports
LexisNexis SmartLinx reports make
logical connections among the vast collection of LexisNexis public
records—among people, businesses and locations—and deliver the
comprehensive summaries to your desktop.
Now the LexisNexis SmartLinx
feature has been enhanced. You can see it in the new report format.
But there’s much more. Now public records data from Seisint
databases is included in your SmartLinx™ search. Plus data available
for SmartLinx reports is updated within 24 hours of release in most
cases. And reports are generated on demand, so information stays
current.
Here’s an overview of the new
enhancements to the SmartLinx search form, results display and
report:
Reviewing the New SmartLinx Search Form
Now there are more options available in SmartLinx search forms as
well as new, built-in enhancements to improve search accuracy:
- The search form default
includes a “sounds like” feature that automatically locates
phonetic spellings, e.g., Mill Valley, Millvalley or
Milvalley. This feature can be turned off by un-checking its
form box.
- Find nicknames
automatically. For example, “Thomas” will also find “Tom,”
“Tommie” and “Tommy.”
- Search by proximity/within
a radius of an address, up to 100 miles. The default is 30
miles.
- Metro-suburban name
equivalencies, e.g., Chicago or Napierville, will be
searched automatically.
- Mandatory search fields
have been eliminated. (All results are displayed by relevancy.)
- Select a permissible use
option ... right on your search form.
New Search
Results—the CITE List Display
It’s easier now to find the right person, business or location
because the new CITE display:
- Presents in column format
for fast, easy review. Plus, find information about each
subject, e.g., addresses, phone numbers, name variations, etc.,
to help you determine which report(s) to view first.
- Ranks search results by
relevancy.
- Combines the same individual
into a single entry. On the results page, multiples entries
for the same individual are now automatically combined in a
single entry.
New
SmartLinx Report Format and Information
You can still “visualize” your SmartLinx reports, graphically
viewing and manipulating the four-color graphics. Plus you can still
link to source documents to validate information and navigate among
the report sections. But now you’ll also notice:
- A new, easy-to-read column
format. Use the links at the top of the report to move to
any section. When you print or download*, the column format is
maintained.
- “As of” dates on
address results help you identify when a person lived at a
particular address.
- High/medium risk indicator
“flags” within reports (and in the CITE display) identify
potential risk or fraud factors, including people who are
deceased, living in a mental institution, using a post office
box, using a Social Security number that was issued before the
individual’s birth date, etc.
- In addition to Associated
Entities, e.g., business associates, SmartLinx reports now
include potential relatives, potential neighbors and
demographic data for neighborhoods.
- You can gain access to
information about other individuals/businesses associated
with your target.

A SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT . . .
Thanks, Holley … We’ll Miss You
Cindy Spohr, Senior Director, LexisNexis
Librarian Relations Group:
LexisNexis has worked closely with law librarians and law
librarian associations ever since the company was founded. In 1993,
all efforts with librarians were consolidated into the LexisNexis
Librarian Relations Group. I was privileged to be a founding group
member.
Soon after, in 1994, Holley Thompson joined the team as its new
leader. We welcomed her experience—not only her law-school and
law-firm librarian background, but her broad knowledge from
consulting in the legal industry.
And we watched the LexisNexis Librarian Relations Group grow!
Through Holley’s leadership, the LexisNexis Librarian Relations
Group expanded its sights, its mission and its standards, reaching
LexisNexis law librarian customers across the nation. More
importantly, we all worked to promote the profession. For example,
LexisNexis proudly endowed the AALL Research Fund in 2000,
permanently securing its financial base so the AALL Research
Committee could carry out the association’s research agenda.
As Holley’s tenure with LexisNexis progressed, she was called to
manage a broader marketing organization. Her support for the
Librarian Relations Group remained strong, and she stayed involved,
though often working behind the scenes.
So it is with very mixed feelings that I tell you that Holley
has decided to retire from LexisNexis at year’s end to
explore the next facet of her career. While I am certainly pleased
for her, the Librarian Relations Group and the company will miss her
leadership and vision.
We owe such a debt of gratitude to Holley for her continuous
support of the Librarian Relations Group as well as the law
librarian profession. Thank you, Holley, for your open-minded
leadership—and for your personal friendship—these past 11 years.
Holley Thompson, Senior Vice President,
LexisNexis Marketing:
You’re very welcome. When you cherish your day-to-day
work as well as your life-long profession, enthusiasm and commitment
come easily.
Libraries have always been part of my life—right from my
childhood at the reading tables. One of my first high-school jobs
was as a clerk at the local public library. Sure, I love being a mom
(and a grandmother), and I loved being a math teacher. But I always
came back to the library.
During the last 25 years, librarianship and the law fused within
my life. I consider myself a librarian and a lawyer and
a consultant. My 11-year tenure at LexisNexis is my longest in any
position, probably because the professional challenges and
recognitions were more than enough to appeal to all the facets of my
professional life.
I’ve enjoyed mentoring Librarian Relations Consultants and
librarian colleagues, feeling the excitement they experience when
they realize that being a trained librarian opens many doors. It’s
the individual who decides which door, at what point in the
professional journey.
And now it’s time for me to open the next door, to reinvent
myself one more time before becoming a full-time grandmother. As I
move into the next phase of my professional life, I leave LexisNexis
proud of the LexisNexis Librarian Relations Group and its impact.
It’s been my personal privilege to work with the team, all
librarians extraordinaire.
And it’s been a privilege to meet so many of you throughout the
years—at your offices or at local, regional and national meetings
and educational seminars. I know many of you professionally, and I
am so pleased to call many of you personal friends as well as
professional colleagues.
Leaving is difficult, no doubt. But I keep reminding myself that
I’m leaving things in such good hands. Cindy Spohr, my colleague
throughout my journey at LexisNexis, will continue to deliver
excellence. Those of you who know Cindy know you’ll get nothing
less.
And you’ll always have my best wishes, as you and our wonderful
profession evolve. I’ll be watching and relishing all your
accomplishments. And I’ll be proud.

KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE ...
For the Low-Down on Experts … Who You Gonna Call?
By Deidra
Payne, LexisNexis Librarian Relations Consultant
I am fortunate to have a career that allows me to travel
throughout the Southeastern United States. As a result of my
travels, though, I spend a number of evenings in hotels rooms,
glancing at television shows as I read e-mail.
It hit me this evening: There are a lot of crime-solving and
courtroom-action shows on TV. And, in most episodes, they rely upon
compelling “experts” to resolve the case or capture the jury’s
attention.
And I began to wonder … who would I call if I
needed an expert, let’s say, for a malpractice lawsuit claim? This
question led me to turn off the tube and turn to the LexisNexis®
Total Research System to see what resources could offer me a
comprehensive representation of experts. Here’s what I found:
Begin by exploring the Combined Jury Verdict and Settlement
Reports (found under the PUBLIC RECORDS tab) to identify the
various cases an expert has worked on.
After that, look for U.S. and Non-U.S. case opinions to
find instances when an expert’s testimony has been challenged.
While you’re tracking down the legal angle, also search the
Combined Law Reviews database. (Law review articles do contain
valuable information about experts, including discussions of their
testimony.)
Interested in retrieving the testimony? Head to LexisNexis
CourtLink, a fantastic resource for finding motions to exclude
testimony resumes, filed transcripts of testimony, affidavits, etc.
Since many experts often do work for agencies or testify before
them, exploring Federal and State Agency Opinions is very
valuable. Many times more prominent experts actually testify and
submit documents before Congressional Committees. So check out the
various Congressional Sources on the LexisNexis services.
Once you have a clear image of the legal involvement by an
expert, begin to probe the powerful News resources on the
LexisNexis services. This is essential for tracking down
professional and personal information about an expert. The
information you discover in a news article may, in fact, direct you
to an expert’s personal information (i.e., any personal lawsuits,
real estate, bankruptcies, political affiliations, etc.) that
may indicate biases or untruthfulness.
Of course, an investigation is not complete unless you confirm
the credentials an expert claimed on their resume. So search
Biographical & Expert Directories as well as the Professional
Licenses databases to verify the expert is certified in a
certain profession in a particular state.
As you see, performing a comprehensive expert search can be
complex, given the many resources you can search. But “complex”
doesn’t have to mean “difficult.”
Fortunately the LexisNexis® Analyzer report product offers
you the ability to complete this complex expert research—with just
one search.
It’s true. And using LexisNexis Analyzer is as simple as filling
out a search form. Go to LexisNexis Analyzer—it’s listed on the main
LexisNexis services menu screen, on the LEGAL tab—and select the
Expert tab. You have immediate access to more than 20 sources. Pick
and choose sources if you like.
The results are returned to you in a clean and easy-to-read
report. I highly recommend that you ask your LexisNexis Librarian
Relations Consultant to review this powerful tool with you.

FLASH . . . 1) New Publication Delves into Defending
Securities-Enforcement Actions; 2)
More New Securities Sources…
1) New
Publication Delves into Defending Securities-Enforcement Actions
Securities Enforcement: Counseling and Defense is a blend
of authoritative analysis and practical insight to defending
securities-enforcement actions by the SEC, DOJ and other government
authorities.
Available in print and online at www.lexis.com, this
source analyzes the legal issues, strategies and procedural issues
involved in representing clients in the full range of
securities-enforcement actions, including defending private
litigation and criminal investigations.
Find practice comments in almost every chapter, and appendices
with sample litigation papers, forms, reports, memoranda, selected
SEC releases, SEC Rules of Investigation, primary source of relevant
securities acts, rules and regulations.
Written for attorneys handling securities-enforcement matters,
Securities Enforcement: Counseling and Defense also benefits
civil litigators, criminal defense lawyers and corporate counsel.
Authors Kenneth B. Winer and Samuel J. Winer are partners in
securities practice at Foley & Lardner LLP (Washington, D.C.). Both
have extensive securities-enforcement experience prior to their
private practice. Samuel Winer is a former staff attorney and
special counsel with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s
Division of Enforcement.
Kenneth Winer was a Branch Chief of the Division of Enforcement
at the Securities and Exchange Commission. He is currently the chair
of the D.C. Bar committee on Corporate Governance and Accounting and
previously chaired the D.C. Bar Committee on Broker-Dealer
Regulation and SEC Enforcement.
To find Securities Enforcement: Counseling and Defense
online, select the Securities practice area of law on the main
www.lexis.com menu page. Presented as a table of contents,
researchers can browse for topics, search the table for concepts or
search the full-text publication.
To order print copies of Securities Enforcement: Counseling and
Defense, talk to your LexisNexis account executive or go to the
LexisNexis bookstore at
www.lexisnexis.com/bookstore

More New Securities Sources…
Three new sources of financial and securities information from
Institutional Shareholders Services (ISS) are also now available via
lexis.com®. (All three sources are available at this source
path: Legal tab > Securities > Corporate Governance) These highly
requested new sources include:
ISS Corporate Governance Quotient—Find ratings on
how well individual companies are complying with corporate
governance requirements. (Product Postings, included with this
edition, offer more information.) Use this resource for due
diligence, e.g., a proposed acquisition of a company with a low
rating might be considered too risky. Or turn to Corporate
Governance Quotient for client development purposes, e.g., a
company with a low rating needs advice on how to improve the rating.
ISS Proxy Research Reports—Find recommendations on
how shareholders should vote on proxies. Because many proxies focus
on corporate governance issues, these recommendations are important
to attorneys for the same reasons as Corporate Governance
Quotient. (Check Product Postings for more details on Proxy
Research Reports.)
ISS Securities Class Action Services—Find details
on securities class-action filings and settlements for due diligence
purposes. Also better understand what companies are subject to
lawsuits and why. (See Product Postings for more details.)
