TAKE A TOUR . . . New LexisNexis® Total Litigator...One-ID Access to the LexisNexis® Portfolio of Litigation Products and Services

So many tasks in the litigation process … drafting documents, conducting discovery, performing legal research, service of process, etc. Now LexisNexis—and only LexisNexis—offers one-point access to accomplish all of these tasks.

New LexisNexis Total Litigator provides a unique strategic advantage for your litigators. A single Web interface that integrates the LexisNexis portfolio for litigators, LexisNexis Total Litigator offers single sign-on access to this critical content. That means users get more control over the litigation process.

It works so well the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) has endorsed LexisNexis Total Litigator as the “best option for litigators”—the first time this prestigious organization has endorsed a commercial product.

LexisNexis Total Litigator is designed primarily around the litigator’s workflow. Just identify the task you want to accomplish, e.g., draft, file and serve documents, and Total Litigator presents the sources (as well as the products and services) you can utilize to accomplish the task.
For example, just select:

•      Draft, File & Send Documents—Links in this screen category put you in touch with key facts and insights that give litigation documents a winning advantage. Or gain access to an exclusive briefs, motions and pleadings database that focuses on the newest, most relevant cases. Also serve parties in seconds—nationwide—through a network of more than 1,500 process servers.

•      Conduct Legal Research—These links help you gain online access to state and federal case law; codes and statutes; court documents; legal and business news; the Shepard’s® Citations Service; and so much more.

•      Alerts & Tracked Dockets—These links help you manage all the client’s case-monitoring needs. Tap into LexisNexis® Alert as well as alerts from LexisNexis® CourtLink®, Shepard’s and LexisNexis® File & Serve. All from LexisNexis Total Litigator.

•      Plan & Conduct Discovery—Click links here and map out complete strategies with time-saving tools and technology that give you detailed insights on everything from depositions and interrogatories to subpoenas. Even tap into e-discovery tools. No additional ID needed.

•      Gather Intelligence—These links help you stay informed on every aspect that could affect the case—company, business and industry news; docket updates; details on judges, attorneys, parties, witnesses; and more.

Plus you can stay on top of the latest events with the current day’s litigation news. Or move directly to lexis.com®, CourtLink®, or File & Serve. Map your IDs together. Then no additional sign on is needed.

Discover LexisNexis® Total Litigator at www.lexisnexis.com/litigator

Click Sign On and complete the one-time registration. That’s it. There is no charge to use the LexisNexis Total Litigator interface for all of your LexisNexis subscriptions* available through Total Litigator. Now you’re ready to select a tab or choose a link for the task you want to perform. Here’s an overview:

LexisNexis Total Litigator screen shot

A. Draft, File & Send Documents
With these links, litigators can:

  • draft winning legal documents with the aid of authoritative Matthew Bender treatises and forms.
  • see how others have successfully drafted documents by reviewing Shepard’s Briefs.
  • execute nationwide service of process with National Document Services powered by LexisNexis File & Serve—a network of more than 1,500 process servers.
  • request nationwide retrieval of up to 20 years worth of federal and state court documents.

The Total Litigator search forms manage source selection and searching for you.
For example, click a Draft, File & Send category link, e.g., Forms, Legal Requirements & Checklists. Then:

  1. Select a search option, e.g., jurisdiction or practice area
  2. Choose a specific practice area or jurisdiction, e.g., complex litigation or federal
  3. Select a drafting task, e.g., motions or pleadings
  4. Select a document type, e.g., motion to exclude
  5. LexisNexis Total Litigator shows you the types of documents available.
Select, e.g., forms. Click SEARCH. You’re ready to review your results—
    and start drafting.

B. Plan & Conduct Discovery
Look at the links in this category. Litigators can:

  • formulate practical, cost-effective e-discovery strategies —designed by lawyers for lawyers—that include technical advice.
  • deliver faster discovery turnaround for clients, processing up to seven million pages per day.
  • exercise greater ability to annotate, redact and organize documents with versatile online review application.

For example, click Depositions. Then:

  1. Select jurisdiction
  2. Select New York
  3. Select from available sources, e.g., Deposition Subpoena
  4. Forms, checklists and legal requirements are available for your review.
(Review all or only what you need. Checkboxes help you choose.) Click SEARCH. Move among the source types with the tabs at the top of the results screen.

C. Conduct Legal Research
Links in this category make it easier to:

  • uncover the most highly relevant information critical to a case.
  • verify citation formats, validate citations and directly link to case law and statutory material.
  • gain insight and analysis with legal news from Mealey’s™, the most frequently cited treatises— including Collier’s, Chisum, Moore’s, Nimmer and more—and extensive news & business sources. Turn to news powerhouses like The Wall Street Journal®, The New York Times®, Dow Jones®
    newswires and thousands of others.

D. Gather Intelligence
The easy-to-understand links in this category help users:

  • Mine cases for the facts to build a solid case.
  • Access the most extensive database of 15 million court records and 3.8 billion public records—1.8 billion more than any other provider.
  • Verify facts with the most authoritative and comprehensive news and business offerings available to the legal market.
  • Develop profiles on all the major figures in a case—litigants, judges, opposing counsel, experts.

E. Alerts & Tracked Dockets
The links here keep users in the know. For example, they can:

  • be well-prepared by obtaining the most up-to-date research results—without additional search requests
  • make sure cases are still good law with the Shepard’s Citations Service
  • rely on the vast resources of CourtLink for federal and state docket updates
  • maintain close watch on any topic pertinent to their legal issue by tapping into
the LexisNexis services for legal, business and financial information.

F. Select one ID and password for your LexisNexis Total Litigator log on.
Then no additional sign-on is needed during Total Litigator use.

G. All searches in lexis.com sources—including Get a Document searches—
are saved for 30 days so you can return and review.

H. Tabs and task lists stay visible as you research so navigating is easy.

I. Move directly to today’s top litigation stories from Mealey’s. Even choose a topic.

J. Need fast access to a full-text case or a Shepard’s report? Click, enter the
cite and go.

KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE ... Ten LexisNexis Features Worthy of a Librarian’s Love…

By Matthew Wagner , LexisNexis Librarian Relations Consultant

In honor of February, I’m paying homage to the most notorious “hallmark holiday” of all … Valentine’s Day! This year I’m dedicating my heart to the LexisNexis services.

Now I openly admit to taking a “tongue-in-cheek” approach, but I’m in earnest when I share the Top 10 features I love about www.lexis.com. Take a look. Maybe we share the same loves.  Or perhaps these 10 are unfamiliar to you. If so, as February fades into March, I hope you find some time to check out my favorite features and content … and fall in love too.

Here, in no particular order:

  • Command Searching—For all of you still pining away for your first online legal research love, LexisNexis research software, this is the next best thing. Select the COMMAND SEARCHING tab at the top of the main lexis.com menu screen, type in library and file names, as well your initial search, separated by semicolons.
  • Get & Print—This is a huge timesaver! This convenient tool allows you to print multiple cases, statutes and law reviews all at once. You can even Shepardize® these documents too. What’s not to love? Find Get & Print by selecting the GET A DOCUMENT tab.
  • Research Tasks Pages—These are what I call our “one-stop shopping” research solutions. From these pages, you can find the most relevant information for a specific area of law or jurisdiction (several offered) collected in a single place. Moreover, each page includes search templates for quick and precise searching. Move right from search box to answer set. And combine resources for thorough analysis through one search. Just click the RESEARCH TASKS tab to select a page.
  • Mealey’s Reports & Conferences—Not only do the reports give in-depth information on all the latest legal disputes and litigation trends, you can also obtain full-text court documents. And get materials presented at the renowned Mealey’s conferences. Find Mealey’s resources at this path: Legal tab > Secondary Legal > Mealey’s Reports & Conferences
  • Recently Used Sources—As you research, the LexisNexis services at www.lexis.com automatically saves a list of the last 20 sources you have used. Click the Edit Sources link in the Recently Used Sources box, and you can actually select up to 20 sources you want to save permanently. You get “Favorites” functionality similar to most Internet browsers.
  • Baseline In Production Credits—This one is simply for fun for me—and truly a favorite—but librarians in firms practicing entertainment law find it valuable. This nifty resource contains the status of films, TV movies, specials, pilots, series, and miniseries that are either announced, in preproduction, production, post-production, or awaiting release. Limit your search to the CAST segment if you want to search for your favorite actor or actress. Find Baseline In Production Credits at: News & Business tab > Market & Industry > By Industry & Topic > Entertainment & Arts
  • Shepardize a Headnote—With this feature, you can use relevant LexisNexis® Headnotes to identify citing cases that discuss specific issues of interest. Simply Shepardize a case then link directly to those citing references that share that same topic classification. Alternatively you use this feature when viewing case law results. View the LexisNexis Headnotes contained in the case law summary, then simply click the Shepardize: Restrict by Headnote link that follows a LexisNexis headnote of interest.
  • Historical Quotes—This is one of my brand new favorites!  It contains more than 25 years worth of stock quotes, bonds, currencies, commodities, unit trust and more. It offers easy-to-use search templates as well as interactive charts. If you haven’t taken time to look at Historical Quotes yet, I guarantee it will be love at first sight! (Check out the lead article in January’s LexisNexis Information Professional Update for more information.)
  • Explore Button—Say “goodbye” to the scroll bar, and say “hello” to the new love of your online research life! This feature, which appears at the bottom left of most documents, enables you to quickly link to various segments of the document you are viewing—with one click of the mouse.
  • Book Browse—This feature is the love that never dies. You can use Book Browse with statutes and treatises. The Book Browse button appears at the top of any document from these content types. Click, then use the Next or Previous arrows to view preceding and succeeding sections without running a new search request. For those of you working in commercial organizations, that means no charges beyond the first initial search or link. Who doesn’t love cost-effective research?!

There are many more unique features and content available at www.lexis.com Contact your LexisNexis Librarian Relations Consultant and let them share with you what they love most. Even better, you tell us what you love.

THRIFTY SEARCHER . . . Now! Combine Up to 50 Sources—Across Menu Screens

Take the in-depth look your issue demands. Study federal and state case law, statutes, legislation, agency decisions, news and more. And complete all of this research with one search … simultaneously.

Now at www.lexis.com, you can combine the sources you need across menu screens, source types, even menu tabs.  Create combinations never possible before. Here are just a few examples:

  • Search multiple state statutes, cases, regulations, legislative history, and news all at one time.
  • Conduct exhaustive due diligence research through news, company information, filings, and cases.
  • View authoritative answers from Matthew Bender, Tax Analysts Inc., CCH®, John Wiley, and other key publishers—all at once
  • Search through filings, news and incorporations—a trademark search in one step

LexisNexis® Combined Search automatically arranges your search results so you can home in on any source type in a flash. Plus your customized source combinations are saved automatically in your Recently Used Sources (last 20) list so you can return and research another issue.

Your LexisNexis account executive will also have more details on LexisNexis Combined Search, including pricing information.

Here’s How to Combine LexisNexis Sources:
Each source on the www.lexis.com menu that you can combine has a white checkbox next to the source name. (Sources not available for combination have gray checkboxes.)

  1. Check the box next to the sources you want to search. For example, under the LEGAL tab, in the Taxation area of law, select the Code of Federal Regulations, IRS Cumulative Bulletin, Internal Revenue Bulletin, Private Letter Rulings and Technical Advice Memoranda and Tax Analysts Tax Notes Today®.
  2. There’s more. Now click the NEWS & BUSINESS tab. Your legal tab sources are saved. Check news sources, e.g., News, Most Recent Two Years (English Full Text).
  3. When you’re done selecting sources—up to 50—click the red Combined Sources button. Note the Combined Search message above the search box. Each source you selected is listed. (Click the “i” icon to move to an online description of each source.) Add your search terms and click Search.

Here’s How to Review LexisNexis Combined Search Results:
The ALL RESULTS tab displays first. Scan your results. Find up to 12 tabs. See exactly how many documents were found for each source type.

Select a tab or a blue link to move to results for a source type. Rest your cursor on a tab’s red arrow, and a pop-up box shows you the document types available under that tab.

For example, rest your cursor on AGENCY DECISIONS, then select the Private Letters Rulings and Technical Advice Memoranda link to move to a cite list of PLR and TAM documents retrieved. Click on specific document links to move to full-text documents.

Printing Tabbed Results
Use your standard LexisNexis printing options. For example, print any document or cite list you are viewing. Or select specific documents to print or download*.

LexisNexis Combined Search also offers several additional printing/downloading options:

  • Click the Print Summary Table link on the right side of your ALL RESULTS tab to print the overview table.
  • Print/download specific document types. As you review your tabbed results, click the Print or Download link. Select document types, e.g., just statutes and regulations, under Document Range.

*According to the terms of your LexisNexis subscription agreement.
