TAKE A TOUR. . .New Shepard's® BriefCheck™ for the Web: More Cite-Checking Accuracy Plus Web Flexibility

Draft high-quality, winning legal briefs, motions and pleadings faster and more accurately with Shepard’s BriefCheck for the Web, the newest cite-validation tool that combines the authoritative power of Shepard’s® Citations Service with the convenience of the Web.

Shepard’s BriefCheck for the Web identifies legal citations within your document, validates citations through Shepard’s Citations Service and generates a concise summary report tagging problem cites for immediate attention.

Count on Shepard’s BriefCheck to add flexibility to your Shepard’s® Brief Suite™ collection. While Shepard’s® CheckCite® software application checks case-law and law-review citations, Shepard’s BriefCheck on the Web also:

  • Checks U.S. and state statutes, patents, tax & Treasury materials and legislative documents as well as cases and law reviews.
  • Provides Shepard’s Smart Answer Set for statutes. Smart Answer Set gives you only those Shepard’s reports with legislative history and citing decisions with negative analysis. Get more relevant information without extra steps—or cost.
  • Offers checked cases’ LexisNexis® Headnotes, Core Terms and Case Summaries in attached full-text documents and Shepard’s Signal™ indicators for fast identification of problem areas. (Also find Shepard’s Signal indicators for citing references.)
  • Delivers results as an e-mail attachment. Add a note and send!

Plus Shepard’s BriefCheck alerts you to invalid cites in your document, i.e., text that looks like cites, but doesn’t contain all the appropriate elements. What a timesaver!

KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE. . . .Will a Simple Power Outage Sever Your Business’s Future?

by Gayle Lynn-Nelson, LexisNexis Senior Librarian Relations Consultant

It’s a fact: Data damage is more likely to result from a power outage than from any physical damage. And power outages aren’t uncommon; they can occur when construction equipment cuts a power line. And, of course, these accidents occur without warning.

Bottom line … company data must be backed up on an ongoing basis. The more critical the information, the more often you should back it up. Automatic backups rather than those that require human intervention are preferable.

How do you backup your servers today? According to a recent ABA Technology survey, only 40% of respondents said that they have a disaster recovery plan for data. Are you 100% satisfied that you could restore your critical business data today? Studies have shown that tape backups are unreliable with restores failing 50% of the time.

The intellectual data stored in your computers is your work product. LexisNexis® Managed Network Services ensure that your firm’s business can continue to operate by protecting critical systems, data and data access. LexisNexis Managed Network Services may include any or all of these elements:

  • Data backup and protection, including storage management and support
  • Disaster-recovery services, including data replication and recovery
  • Systems hosting, including management and monitoring
  • Use of a global data network with nodes in most major cities for customer connections
  • Business continuity planning, design and testing
  • Hosted document, e-mail & records management services

Plus LexisNexis has developed an alliance with LiveVault Corporation. LiveVault® is a continuous data backup service that allows you to eliminate the tedious and unreliable process of performing tape backups of the e-mail, document-management, or any other litigation databases. LiveVault makes electronic copies of data as it is changed or added. The data is transmitted over your Internet connection to the vault.

The LexisNexis Data Backup and Protection Service powered by LiveVault can offer the following services to firms preserving less than 500 gigabytes:

  • Continuous online backup of the data, so that the data is recoverable up to the minute the interruption occurs
  • The backup and protection of open, changing files and databases such as Exchange, SQL and Oracle
  • The ability for the customer to manage and monitor the entire backup and vaulting process from a Web browser anywhere, anytime
  • Automatic detection of problems at any stage of backup or recovery and corrective action initiation and notification

LexisNexis can also serve as a primary or secondary site to host the firm’s systems. LexisNexis uses world-class data centers that meet rigorous industry standards for optimal data security. LexisNexis technology personnel have decades of experience in the legal market and are focused on supporting the deadlines and client demands of law firms and legal departments.

LexisNexis Systems Hosting Services include:

  • Architecture/engineering consultation
  • Selection, acquisition and configuration of hardware, software, tools, applications, and Internet and network connectivity
  • Housing of hardware at a world-class data center
  • Full data-center services, including support for capacity and performance, database and systems administration
  • Monitoring and troubleshooting across all platforms

LexisNexis offers your business:

  • A tailored solution, regardless of the amount of business data
  • Automatic problem detection at any stage of backup or recovery
  • Secure off-site vaulting in world-class data centers
  • The added option of housing firm servers at LexisNexis facilities
  • Prompt on-site service
  • Physical media shipment to ensure business continuity

Most importantly, LexisNexis lets your management and staff focus on vital client issues and short- and long-term growth plans instead of data issues. Secure your data … protect your practice.

Is Your Management Asking the Right Questions to Prepare?
LexisNexis business-continuity specialists have prepared a detailed white paper that walks law-firm management through the planning process needed to create an effective Business Continuity Plan.
