Survey 50 States’ Laws and Regulations;
It Only Takes One Click at lexis.com®

The client is launching a new business—one that will operate in multiple states. They need to understand each applicable state’s laws on a specific topic … let’s say, worker safety.

Suddenly you envision your lunch hours over the next week—researching statutes and regulations state by state, pinpointing terminology and requirement differences as you go and double-checking to make sure you didn’t miss anything. It’s time-consuming, complex research.

But it doesn’t have to be. Now simplicity is the key to state law surveys: One research source … one mouse click … no search necessary.

With new LexisNexis 50-State Surveys of Statutes and Regulations, you can view the general statutory and regulatory provisions on a specific topic for all 50 states. They’re all compiled for you in one report. Now over lunch—even before you can finish your sandwich—you can click on Employee Safety & Health and download a survey, already in a Microsoft® Excel® spreadsheet. States are listed alphabetically. There are defined sections for codes, regulations and even court rules that may address your topic—complete with the citations you need. Click and link to the full-text documents. Add notes, collaborate and share the information with colleagues and clients.

LexisNexis 50-State Surveys of Statutes and Regulations are compiled by experienced LexisNexis® editors who carefully study the laws of each state to identify those that are most relevant for each topic. You save countless hours and still have confidence that you’re looking at all relevant law on a given topic.

Topics for these general areas of law are now available: (Tap into a variety of surveys for each topic. Plus additional survey topics will be added weekly throughout the year.

Need to Compile Current State Laws? Here’s How with LexisNexis 50-State Surveys of Legislation & Regulations

LexisNexis 50-State Surveys of Legislation & Regulations offer an overview of legislation, regulations and even court rules that may address a particular topic. No other information provider offers all of this content in one survey. And access is simple.

Here’s how to request a survey:

  1. Find LexisNexis 50-State Surveys of Legislation & Regulations where you locate other state statute and legislative materials.
Go to: (Additional source paths will be added later this year.)

    Legal > States Legal - U.S. > Combined States > Statutes & Legislative Materials

  2. This source is displayed automatically when selected.

  3. Scroll through the topic list and click a survey link, e.g., Employee Safety and Health. (Note: you must have access to Microsoft Excel to display survey results.)

  4. That’s it. Your 50-state survey is displayed in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

Once the survey spreadsheet is displayed, you have a variety of options. You can:

  • Browse through the spreadsheet and click any link to move to the full-text documents, e.g., click 8 CCR 330
    et seq
If your organization has subscription access to this statute, you connect to the full text without additional charge.

If you’ve saved your LexisNexis® ID and password, you’ll move directly to the document. If not, you’ll be prompted to enter your ID and password.

Tip: While viewing the full-text document, use Browse Book to move to sequential sections without charge.)

To return to your spreadsheet, close your lexis.com window.

  • Download the survey spreadsheet using your browser’s standard SAVE AS function.

The spreadsheet is a read-only document until you download it.

Downloading unlocks the spreadsheet. Now you and your colleagues can add notes, links to additional materials, etc. Or share the information via e-mail. Even create a final report for transmission to clients.

  • Be confident your information is accurate. New survey topics will be added on a weekly basis throughout the year, and existing surveys will be updated twice a year.

Some “Tried ’n True” Resources are Worth Remembering

By Danielle Francis, LexisNexis Librarian Relations Consultant

As a LexisNexis Librarian Relations Consultant (LRC), I have the pleasure, along with my fellow LRCs, of showing librarians new and enhanced features and content available through lexis.com. And while this new content is great, today I want to take a moment to remind you of some “oldies but goodies” when it comes to research:

RDS TableBase

When the information you are searching for is most likely to be found in a table
or chart included in a news/journal article, then TableBase is the place to start. It specializes exclusively in tabular data on companies, industries, products and demographics.

RDS’s precision indexing and unique table titles make it simple to find the information you need. TableBase is indexed for topics such as market share, company and brand rankings, industry and product forecasts, production and consumption statistics, imports and exports, usage and capacity, number of users/outlets, trends
and much more. Some of the more than 1,000 publications covered by TableBase include American Banker, Business Week, Forbes and The Wall Street Journal.

To get a full list of publications, segments for searching and special index terms
in the online source description, click the   icon next to RDS TableBase on the
lexis.com menu screen.

Relevancy Searches

Retrieving too many hits about a company in your news search? Do many of them just mention the company because of their recent earnings call? How can you make your cite list better and a more manageable size when you have already used the COMPANY segment?

Use LexisNexis SmartIndexing Technology™ to add relevancy scores to your search request. For example, your original search is *ENTER: company(abc doughnut). Now try this: company(abc doughnut #90plus#).

You will only retrieve news articles about your company that are 90% or more relevant to your company. You can also use other percentages such as 80, 85 or 95.

Want to capture several name variations or related companies?  Use the PRE/n connector. For example, ENTER: company(GE pre/3 #90plus#).

This search will find GE Asset Management, GE Reinsurance Corp and GE Supply Company.

Want to know more about LexisNexis SmartIndexing Technology, go to the LexisNexis InfoPro Web site. Click the Research Tools for Librarians box and choose How to Use SmartIndexing. There’s even an Advanced Searching section that offers examples of relevancy searches. Find it at http://www.lexisnexis.com/infopro/smartindexing/advancedsearch.asp

ZIP Demographic Reports

Find these easily through LexisNexis® Total Litigator (under the Gather Intelligence Tab) or at lexis.com (News & Business > Market & Industry > Geo - Demographics > ZIP Demographics). Have a jury trial?  Need to know the demographics of a jury pool? You can search by zip code or county name to retrieve a full report based on Census data.Find out about:

  • home values,
  • income levels,
  • population ethnic background, age, gender, occupation,
  • industries of employment,
  • households with a married couple, children and/or a single parent,
  • how long people commute to work.

Even group living is described, including educational dormitories, prisons, barracks and nursing homes. Reports give you the data for current year on file (2006), five-year historical data (2001), and a five-year future projection (2011). And, even though the data is based on Census records, it is updated annually, using more than 1,600 local government and private sources.

So even though your LRC loves to show you what is new and different at lexis.com, we can also offer some great tips on sources that have been an integral part of our research system for years. Please do not hesitate to ask us for assistance with all your research tasks.

Federal Law Librarians Get Customized Resources Through Special Info Pro Blog

The Federal Info Pro Blog—available at www.federalinfopro.com —is dedicated to topics of interest to federal librarians. Find brief, informative posts on library trends, federal librarianship, state and local government topics, local and national library events, special LexisNexis programs, LexisNexis services updates, search tips and much more.

And because it’s a blog, you can also expect to find continually updated content and new resources.

Federal Info Pro is authored and maintained by LexisNexis Information Professional Consultant Marie Kaddell, MLS, MS, MBA. An experienced blogger—she was an official blogger at this year’s AALL, ALA and SLA annual meetings—Kaddell has more than 25 years in the library and information science field with a special focus on law librarianship and technology in libraries. Currently she supports government librarians across the country and is co-chair of the SLA Division of Government Information.

But you’ll find many contributors at Federal Info Pro, because it welcomes guest bloggers who would like to share their views and expertise. For example, right now at Federal InfoPro, you’ll find links to:

  • Best Practices for Federal Libraries: Professional Development: Here’s a compilation of more than 40 articles (and Web site links) to help you plan your own professional development strategies. Find articles from federal librarians including:

    David McBee, Senior Reference Librarian, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency Library;

    Bob Farina, Director, Trademark Law Library; Peggy Garvin, Chair, SLA Government Information Division;

Blane Dessy, Director, Library Staff, Justice Management Division, U.S. Department of Justice Libraries; and many more.

  • Ten Cool Technologies that Can Impact the PR Plan @ Your Library®. Get Kaddell’s wrap-up of this ALA presentation by SLA President-Elect Stephen Abrams. He discusses the profound effect of blogs, podcasts, wikis and more, including Second Life, Flickr and Twitter. Also get a link to the entire presentation on the ALA Web site.
  • Federal Librarians’ Continuing Education. Cornell Winston, Law Librarian, U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California and Executive Board Member of the AALL, lays out steps you can take to get the most out of continuing education.
  • Professional Development and the Power of Peers. Adriana Younskevicius, Special Assistant to the Director, U.S. Department of Justice Libraries, brings you up-to-date on the AALL Federal Law Librarians Caucus—now ready to celebrate its first birthday. The caucus listserv has been generating discussions on federal library closures, embedded librarians—even a provocative thread on developing collaborative relationships for the purposes of research services, collection development and training. Join the caucus’ listserv at http://share.aallnet.org/read/ (or send an e-mail to owner-fllc@aallnet.org). Once you are a member, you can post to the listserv by sending an e-mail to fllc@aallnet.org. You do not have to be a member of AALL to join the caucus or the listserv.

Of course, you’ll find links to some helpful LexisNexis support sites, including the LexisNexis Searchable Directory of Online Sources, LexisNexis Online Tutorials and the LexisNexis Customer Support Knowledge Share and Knowledge Base Web sites.

But there’s more. Kaddell has also compiled Government Libraries Resources, a good list of sidebar links to take you to tools that will help you in your work. For example, link to the:

  • Federal Library and Information Center (FLICC)
  • FirstGov Directory of Links to Government and Public Libraries
  • PDF of the FLICC Handbook of Federal Librarianship
  • List of U.S. Government Podcasts
  • Louisiana State University Libraries’ Federal Agencies Directory
