LexisNexis®
CourtLink®: Evolution and
Advancement
(October 2004) By
Bridget
MacMillan,
Librarian Relations Consultant
If you have been using LexisNexis®
CourtLink® for a few years now, you have
no doubt witnessed its evolution and continual development.
CourtLink began as an advanced docket-searching database. I remember
first using it and enjoying the intuitiveness and simplicity of the
interface, yet it was sophisticated and advanced enough to allow for
so much more than docket-number searching. I immediately was a fan of
the format of the docket. The CourtLink docket was a cleaner version
than what I had experienced with PACER; it did not require me to do
any reformatting.
Additional services soon proved valuable, too. Using the Track feature
I could be notified whenever any activity took place in a specific
docket, or I could arrange an Alert and be notified when new dockets
of interest to me were filed -- like patent cases in a specific court
or cases involving a specific company. Another feature I always
appreciated was CourtLink's deliberate design to allow the user to
stay informed. You can access a list of the courts and their status at
any time, a price list for the different searches, a list of current
charges during a search session, and other such helpful items directly
from the front page of CourtLink.
Then last year LexisNexis® CourtLink®
Strategic Profiles were launched -- another step in the evolution of
using docket information. With CourtLink Strategic Profiles you can
look at the profile of a certain attorney to get a sense of the
strategy that attorney uses, or look at the profile of a judge to see
the type of rulings made in specific cases. You can create a profile
of a company and see what types of litigation are most prevalent and
where. You can also spot trends in litigation based on types of cases
and court locations. These are extremely powerful tools! If you are
interested in learning more about them, please review this
brochure.
You may recall reading about the newest offering from CourtLink in
April, the LexisNexis® CourtLink®
Document Retrieval Service. The service you have come to trust for
docket searching and Strategic Profiles is now able to supply the
underlying documents as well. This is another natural step in the
progression of CourtLink.
CourtLink Document Retrieval Service is built on the commitment to
communication with the customer and ease of use you expect with
CourtLink. The service is unique, because when you place an order
either via phone or using the online ordering system, the research
analyst will take the time to understand the specific needs related to
your order, thus ensuring faster delivery and more accurate results.
You will receive high quality support from knowledgeable research
analysts, personalized order tracking with regular updates on the
status of all open orders, and one monthly invoice for all your
LexisNexis CourtLink transactions. And you will find the pricing
comparable to current retrieval services you may be using. The value
is in the constant communication from CourtLink, the delivery time,
and the consolidated billing. I urge you to try this new service and
let us know if it lives up to the CourtLink standard!
