The Third Conference on Teaching Research in Academic Law Libraries

Sponsored by LexisNexis® in conjunction with the American Association of Law Libraries

The conference will include presentations, structured breakout sessions, demonstrations, and ample opportunity for networking with the faculty, council and other attendees.  Enrollment is limited to 30 participants to maximize the learning and sharing of information.

Costs:

The selected participants are responsible for airfare to and from the conference, lodging, and any personal incidental charges.

There is no registration fee.  LexisNexis will cover the cost of all conference materials and some meals.

Selection Criteria:

The TRIALL Conference is open to all law librarians in academic settings who either have or aspire to some formal or informal instructional responsibilities. In making their decisions, the Selection Committee will strive for diversity in such areas as geographical distribution, school size, and an interest in teaching legal research, even if a program is not yet implemented.

Prano Amjadi

Prano's instructional duties at Santa Clara have included teaching upper division Advanced Legal Research and Advanced Legal Research for Intellectual Property. Prano also serves as the library's liaison with the 1L Legal Analysis, Research and Writing instructors and coordinates the 1L bibliographic instruction and database training.

In addition to her reference and research responsibilities, Prano has also had a major role in the law school's educational technology concerns.  She designed the Library's first ready-reference web page and was one of the creators of the law school's first web site.  She currently serves as the chair of the law school's Web Advisory Committee.  Prano was also instrumental in expanding the library's electronic course reserve system to serve as the law school's intranet. 

Prano is an active member of AALL and her local chapter, NOCALL.  She has coordinated several educational programs for AALL annual meetings, has served on the Copyright Committee, and is finishing her term on the Membership and Retention Committee.  Prano has also chaired the Social Responsibilities SIS and served as the section's newsletter editor for four years. She earned her M.S.L.S. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her J.D. from Santa Clara University.


Timothy L. Coggins

Timothy Coggins is Director of the Law Library and Professor of Law at the University of Richmond School of Law. He has held that position since August 1997. He serves also as the Director of Richmond's first-year Lawyering Skills program, which combines the skills instruction that students encounter during the first year of law school, including legal research, analysis, writing, client interviewing and counseling, negotiation, motion argument, and brief writing to support a motion argument. Local attorneys, Tim, and other law school librarians team teach the first year program. Tim teaches an Advanced Legal Research course for second and third year students. The Richmond Law Library also manages and administers the law school's technology program, including a mandatory laptop requirement for all entering students. Tim and other librarians instruct faculty about the best and most effective ways to incorporate educational technology into their courses.

Tim is an active member of the American Association of Law Libraries and has served as the chair of several AALL committees, including the Government Relations Committee, the Annual Meeting Program Committee, the Access to Electronic Legal Information Committee, and the AALL Professional Development Committee. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Bar Association of the City of Richmond, the Association of American Law Schools, the Virginia Library Association, and the Southeastern, D.C., and Virginia chapters of AALL. He received the AALL "Presidential Certificate of Merit" for his work with information technology and the design, access, and use of government websites. He served as Co-Chair of the Local Arrangements Committee for the Southeastern Chapter's annual meeting, which was held in Richmond, VA in late March, 2004.

Tim has authored numerous articles, including several about effective research in Virginia Lawyer, and book chapters and served as the general editor for The National Conference on Legal Information Issues: Selected Essays (1996). He offers workshops and seminars on Internet legal resources, legal research and writing and print legal resources, and censorship in libraries. Most recently, Tim and the Richmond Librarian for McGuireWoods LLP presented "Forty-Five Internet Sites to Help Your Law Practice" at the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association's solo and small firm conference. Tim recently conducted beginner and advanced Internet searching workshops for members of the Virginia Alliance of Paralegal Associations at its biennial conference.

Prior to his position at the University of Richmond, Timothy was the Director of the Law Library and Associate Professor of Law at the University of Alabama School of Law and the Associate Director and Clinical Assistant Professor of Law at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Law. Tim received his bachelor's degree in English and French from North Carolina Wesleyan College, a master of science degree from Simmons College, and his JD from North Carolina Central University, where he was the Articles Editor of the law review.


Vicki Szymczak

Vicki Szymczak is an Adjunct Professor of Law and the Electronic Information Librarian at Brooklyn Law School. Vicki teaches an Advanced Legal Research class and an International and Foreign Law Research class to upper level students at BLS in which she creatively integrates her knowledge of electronic media into her course curricula. By appearing as a guest lecturer for many professors at BLS, Vicki has fostered acceptance and enthusiasm in her school for alternate teaching methods and actively supports these initiatives at her institution. Vicki has also taught legal research classes at her library school alma mater, Pratt Institute, in her hometown of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Vicki is an active member of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) and the Law Library Association of Greater New York (LLAGNY) and serves on many committees for each organization. She is the current Secretary/Treasurer of the AALL Computing Services Special Interest Section and maintains the teaching resources web pages of the AALL Foreign and Comparative and International Law Special Interest Section. Vicki has appeared as a speaker or coordinator for several AALL Annual Conference programs on topics ranging from multimedia teaching to foreign law research. She contributes regularly to the LLAGNY Lawlines Newsletter, and has several journal articles and book reviews published in peer-reviewed literature. 

Prior to her position at BLS, Vicki worked at Pace University School of Law, and was a private firm librarian at Thelen, Reid & Priest in New York. She earned her J.D. and LL.M. in Comparative and Foreign Law from Duke University School of Law in 1992. In 1995, Vicki graduated with distinction from Pratt Institute School of Information and Library Sciences.


Michael Whiteman

Associate Dean for Law Library Services and Information Technology

Northern Kentucky

Michael Whiteman has worked in law libraries since 1993. He has worked at the Boston College School of Law and the Brandeis School of Law Library, and currently serves as the Associate Dean for Law Library Services and Information Technology. 

Dean Whiteman's research interests include the impact of technology on the practice of law, and he has published articles on this topic. He currently serves as an editor on the Journal of Law and Education and is the co-author of A Union List of Appellate Court Records and Briefs (1999).

Dean Whiteman received his B.A. from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, his Juris Doctorate from the University of Louisville, and his Master's of Science in Library and Information Science from Simmons College. He has been admitted to practice in Massachusetts.
