HELEN M. LAWLESS
Helen M. Lawless began her law library career in 1978, after 9 years as a social studies teacher. She worked as a reference librarian, and then library assistant supervisor at two major NYC law firms before starting at Debevoise & Plimpton as Head of Reference and than the Associate Library Manager in New York. Her current responsibilities include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the library, and coordinating all library research orientation and training for new associates and staff.
She received her B.A. in History from St. Joseph's College in 1969, an M.S. in Secondary Education from Wagner College in 1974, an M.A. in History from Rutgers University in 1977, and a M.S. (LIS) from Pratt Institute in 1990.

Hobbies and interests include cooking, gardening, reading, traveling and volunteer work.
VIRGINIA L. SMITH
Virginia was born and raised in a small rural community in North Carolina, but chose to go to college at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA, where she received her undergraduate degree in English literature, a Masters in Library Science and a Juris Doctorate.
Virginia started her library career in the New Orleans Public Library in 1977 as Head of the Binding, Serials and Duplications Department. Her office was in the basement and she longed for the daylight of the reference desk. That was not to be, however, and she moved on to a position at a medical research library associated with a large medical school in New Orleans where she was the Interlibrary Loan Department and also a backup reference librarian. Though she was much happier in the academic setting, she longed for something more and decided to go to law school.
After three years Virginia received her JD from Louisiana State University School of Law and went to work as an attorney. For two years she practiced defense law for the City of New Orleans and then another five years with a private law firm, Borrello, Huber & Dubuclet. At this time she recognized a growing discontent with the "practice" of law and quit.
Virginia decided to combine her two areas of expertise and accepted a job at a large New Orleans law firm as their Law Librarian. She found the firm of Chaffe, McCall, Phillips, Toler & Sarpy, L.L.C., a great place to learn the art and science of law librarianship and remained with them for nine and a half years.
In the fall of 2002 she saw a position announcement for a director of library services at a large, multi-state firm headquartered in Winston-Salem, NC, just ten miles from the small town where she grew up and where her remaining family still lived. She knew it was time to go home and has not regretted the decision. Her position at Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC, has provided numerous opportunities for her growth as a professional and has taught her that, contrary to the wisdom of literary titles, you can go home again.
MARY STAATS
Mary Staats is the Manager of Library Services at Farella Braun & Martel LLP in San Francisco and has been for the past 17 years. She spent time in the law libraries of four other firms before coming to Farella. On and off, she has also been the czarina of education at Farella, as well.
She earned three degrees, AB, MA and MLIS from the University of California at Berkeley.
Mary is an active member of AALL, SLA and particularly NOCALL, where she was the editor of the NOCALL Union List for 16 years, a member of the Public Access to Information Committee for 2 years and since 1996 she has been chair of the Placement Committee. From 2000 to 2002 she was a member of the West Librarians' Advisory Board. Last year she was a speaker at Glasser Legalworks, "Portals: Friend or Foe" and PLI's Managing the Private Law Library, "CD-ROM:Questions to Ask When Evaluating" in 1993 and "A Legal Memo File" in 1989.
Mary attended TRIPLL in 1991.
On the weekends and in the evenings, she compulsively makes jewelry.
