Multilanguage Indexing

French & German Terms | Search Tips

Now the power and precision offered by LexisNexis SmartIndexing is available in German and French!

How are German and French SmartIndexing terms created?

Native speaking indexers create vocabularies and algorithmic rules governing their application.  Indexers then test and analyze their results in native language sources before a term is released into production.  It's the exact same process we employ for English SmartIndexing - meaning there is no translation or degradation of the vocabulary.  Each index term has been hand-crafted to its target language.

When should German and French SmartIndexing be used?

Just like English SmartIndexing, multi-language SmartIndexing adds value to any search run in German- or French-language news & business content.  Some of the top reasons for using multi-language SmartIndexing include:

  1. Search German- or French-language sources with the same confidence you search English-language sources using SmartIndexing.
  2. Retrieve relevant articles in German or French, even if you don't know the language.
  3. Find breaking news or trends about the European market before they hit the English press.
  4. Compare US and European coverage of the same news using parallel SmartIndexing topics across languages.
  5. Research industries.  It's very difficult to build a keyword search that captures an entire industry - especially in a different business culture.  Take advantage of all the Industry SmartIndexing terms developed by native speakers for each language market.

What topics are covered in French & German indexing?

French and German SmartIndexing consists of hundreds of subject and industry terms covering a wide range of topics including banking & financial services, computing & information technology, crime & justice, trends & document types and much more.

New terms are put into production each month, so look for expanding coverage across a variety of industry and subject areas.

Searching with Relevancy Scores

Just like in English, German and French SmartIndexing terms are tagged with relevance scores.  The same search rules apply.

To use a relevancy score, type the appropriate syntax after the index term.

To find major references:

Add 9*% or #90plus# to the index term and get anything tagged with 90% and above.

Examples:

thema(öl- und gasindustrie 9*% and "fusionen & akquisitionen" 9*%)

OR

thema(öl- und gasindustrie #90plus# and "fusionen & akquisitionen" #90plus#)

To generate a slightly larger set of documents:

Combine the 80% and 90% or use one of the following codes: #80plus# (to capture everything tagged at 80% and higher) or #85plus# (to capture everything tagged at 85% and above).

Example:

sujet(sondage et enquête #80plus# and campagne électorale et élection #85plus#)

Using two or more score ranges:

If you use two or more relevancy scores in your search, make sure to precede those scores by a PRE/2.  This ensures that the search engine will read your search request correctly.

Example:

thema(fluggesellschaften pre/2 7*% or 8*% or 9*% and betriebseinnahmen pre/2 8*% or 9*%)

NOTE  This is the same - although a much easier - search:

thema(fluggesellschaften #70plus# and betriebseinnahmen #80plus#)

ORing two or more index terms:

If you want two or more index terms to precede the relevance score, use a PRE/2 so the search engine understands your request.

Example:

sujet(brevet d'invention or marque pre/2 9*%)

sujet(brevet d'invention or marque pre/2 #90plus#)

Sample Searches

    thema("fusionen & akquisitionen" and telekommunikation #90plus#)

sujet(fusion et acquisition and télécommunication #90plus#)

    thema(unternehmensgewinne #90plus# and dividenden #90plus#)
