Finding Rules of Professional Conduct or Professional Responsibility
LexisNexis carries the rules regarding the conduct of attorneys for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands. These rules are called the Rules of Professional Conduct, the Rules of Professional Responsibility, or the Rules Relating to Discipline of Attorneys, depending on your state. Most of these rules may be located in the following folder:
States Legal - U.S. > Your State > Cases > Rules > Your State & Federal Court Rules
For most states, a simple segment search of heading ( professional conduct ) retrieves all the rules. Unfortunately, the states are not uniform and the segment search must be tailored for some states. Use the following searches to retrieve the rules for the states listed:
- Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin: heading ( rule professional conduct )
- California: heading ( professional conduct ) and not rule ( repealed )
- Kansas: heading ( discipline attorney )
- Massachusetts: heading ( rule concerning practice law )
- Minnesota: heading ( minnesota rule professional conduct )
- North Carolina: heading ( professional conduct and bar )
- Iowa, Nebraska, and Ohio : heading ( professional responsibility )
- United States Virgin Islands: section ( professional responsibility ) and rule /5 adopt!
- Maine: heading ( bar rules )
You can narrow your search down to a particular rule in any of these states by running rule ( XXX ), where XXX is the number or title of the rule.
There is one major exception to finding rules of Professional Responsibility under Court Rules. In the state of New York the rules are contained in the statutes and not in the court rules. Use the search heading ( professional responsibility ) in the following source for New York:
States Legal - U.S. > New York > Statutes & Regulations > NY - New York Consolidated Laws Service
