Using Segments to Narrow your Searches
LexisNexis offers several alternative methods for searching its databases. You can use Terms and Connectors, Natural Language, or Easy Search. Each search method is a useful tool in an online researcher’s repertoire.
You can use Terms and Connectors to run free-text searches or you can narrow down your results using segments. A segment is a portion of a document. You can search just within the segment and exclude the rest of the document. The use of segments is a very powerful tool to get just the documents you want.
For example, assume you want to find the portion of the Delaware Code that deals with Limited Liability Companies. The source you would use would be the following:
States Legal - U.S. > Delaware > Statutes & Regulations > DE - Delaware Code Annotated
If you were to run the term limited liability company as a free-text search, you would retrieve 194 documents. Within those 194 documents are the specific sections that deal with Limited Liability Companies. Unfortunately, you would also retrieve code sections that mention limited liability companies any place in the statutes or the annotations.
By restricting your search with a segment, you can narrow your search results to just the 93 documents that are contained in the Delaware Limited Liability Company Act. The segment to use is the heading segment. The heading segment searches the titles, chapters, parts, etc. of the statute. Run the search heading ( limited liability company ) to retrieve 93 documents.
All documents on LexisNexis are divided into segments, but the segments available in any source depend on the particular source. You can find the names of available segments on the advanced search screen under Restrict by Segment. The guide document for each source has additional information on segments. To view the guide document click next to the source name. Additional information on searching by segments is available in the LexisNexis Knowledge Base [http://support.lexisnexis.com/lexiscom/Record.asp?ARTICLEID=Segment_Searching]
