Determining If Patent Applications Have Been Submitted Outside the U.S.
(February 18, 2005)

In order to determine if a patent application has been submitted in countries outside of the U.S., you need to see if there is a patent family report -- an easy task using www.lexis.com!

Once you have searched for and identified the patent, access the full-text of the patent. You will see up to three links at the top of the patent: drawing sheets, the PDF of the official patent; and Check for Patent Family Report. Another browser window will open that will indicate whether or not a patent family report exists. If a window does not open, then you have your answer, and no additional charges have been incurred.

If a report exists, you will see a link to the full text of the patent family report, as well as an indication of the number of members represented in the report. Access to the full text of the patent family report does incur an additional charge of $6.00. The same report can be accessed multiple times in the same day for only the one charge.
