Shepard's® Citations Formats Link
(August 19, 2005)

The Shepard's® Citations Service provides you with the tools you need to determine the usefulness and validity of legal documents for your research, as well as to find additional supportive documents. The Shepard's Citations Service combines the thorough information and analysis of Shepard's with the speed and ease of electronic legal research. You can search for citations reported in Federal, State, and National Reporter System publications. You'll find:

  • parallel citations to a case
  • case history
  • citations to a case
  • editorial analysis of a case
  • treatment of a case
  • citations from law reviews, bar journals, annotations, and legal treatises

If you do not know an exact citation format, click the Citation Formats link on the Shepard's Enter the Citation to be Checked form to launch a series of forms that help you locate the proper format and enter the correct citation for your research.

For example, after clicking the Citation Formats link, enter the word patent to find Shepard's citation formats for citations containing the word patent. Under "U", you will find a blue link for United States Granted Patent Number in the right column. Click the Pat No link, and then simply enter the patent number per the example. Click the red Check button to Shepardize
®.
