Locating a Company’s Counsel with LexisNexis
(January 30, 2006)

LexisNexis offers several options for quickly locating outside counsel, past or present, for a company.  Below are two crucial tools for finding this type of information.

Martindale-Hubbell
This premiere directory of legal professionals contains thousands of law firm listings.  Most of those law firms provide a list of their representative clients.  Accessing Martindale-Hubbell at lexis.com makes it very easy to locate this type of information.

SOURCE SELECTION PATHWAY:   Legal / Reference / Martindale-Hubbell

The search is quick and simple to run.

EXAMPLE:  Clients(Xerox)

By using the CLIENTS segment you can identify what firms have indicated they represent Xerox.  Depending on your situation you can limit your search to particular geographical area by using the individual Martindale-Hubbell that are smaller in scope, or can make use of the geographical segments available as well.

LexisNexis CourtLink Strategic Profiles
If you need more comprehensive information pertaining to a company’s legal counsel and/or interested in only who has represented them in litigation, then look no further than CourtLink Strategic Profiles.  Specifically, the Litigant Profile will offer over 20 years worth of federal court data on a litigant.  The “Law Firm Analysis” section of this profile will provide you with not only the firms that represented the company in law suits filed in federal court, but you can even narrow your results by seeing which jurisdictions a particular firm represented the company, as well as the attorney(s) involved.   Charts summarizing the data are also available.

If you are a current LexisNexis CourtLink subscriber and would like to run a profile, just sign on to CourtLink (http://www.courtlink.lexisnexis.com) and select the “Strategic Profiles” tab at the top of page.  Next, select Litigant profile, then enter the name of the company in the search template, along with any other search criteria (i.e. date restrictions), and you are on your way!
